BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

None of the four UK nations licenses van mechanics or keeps a register of them. The work must still be done with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — for a business customer, the contract terms matter more, so get them in writing.

Ask for the van service checklist and price in writing. citizensadvice.org.uk →

Goods vehicle operator licence (over 3.5 tonnes)

A business using goods vehicles over 3,500 kg gross plated weight needs an operator licence — from the traffic commissioner in Great Britain, from the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland — and keeping vehicles maintained is part of holding one. Most panel vans are under the limit.

Check the van's plated weight; if it is over 3.5 tonnes, keep every service and inspection record. gov.uk →

The Motor Ombudsman accreditation

No law requires it, but a business accredited to The Motor Ombudsman's Service and Repair Code has agreed to let the Ombudsman settle disputes. For a van mechanic, that means an independent decision if you cannot agree, after the business has had eight weeks to reply.

Check the name on The Motor Ombudsman's Garage Finder; the logo alone proves nothing. businesses.themotorombudsman.org →

A price agreed before the work

Agree the price for the van mechanic in writing before anything is taken apart. If no price was fixed, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 only obliges you to pay a reasonable one, and Citizens Advice says a garage may keep the vehicle while a bill is disputed but may not sell it.

Get the figure in a message, and ask to be called before any extra work. citizensadvice.org.uk →

VAT

Van servicing is standard-rated at 20%. Van mechanics whose taxable turnover passes £90,000 must register, charge VAT and show it as its own line on the quote and invoice.

Ask the garage for its VAT number and a VAT invoice showing the 20%. gov.uk →

“How long will the van be off the road for the service?”

A good answer: A realistic time and whether you can collect the same day.

“What does your van service include, and is the checklist written?”

A good answer: A written checklist for minor and major services.

“Is the oil to the van maker's specification?”

A good answer: Yes, by grade and approval.

“Will the mechanic check the load-bearing parts — tyres, brakes, suspension?”

A good answer: Yes; a working van wears these faster.

“Will you call before extra van repairs found during the service?”

A good answer: Yes, with prices, so you can schedule them.

“Can the van's MOT be done at the same time?”

A good answer: At an authorised station, yes — vans have their own MOT classes and fee caps.

“Do you invoice with VAT for my business?”

A good answer: A VAT invoice with the business name and VAT number, if they are registered.

Getting the quote right

  • Minor or major van service, with its checklist
  • Oil grade and filters named
  • The garage's VAT number, with VAT under parts and labour
  • Expected time off the road
  • A promise to call before any extra work
  • Who actually attends to the van — the garage's technician, employed or subcontracted

Walk away if

  • No checklist for the van service
  • Extra work done without approval
  • No VAT invoice when the business is VAT-registered
  • No service record or mileage on the invoice

AFTER

When the job is done

File the service recordItemised invoice, date and mileage — essential if you sell the van or run vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Plan the advisoriesItems noted but not fixed, priced, so the next job can be booked around work.
Check the warning lights and levelsOil level and any lights in the first days; raise problems at once.
Close the loopReview once you have lived with the result for a few days; if it falls short, the make-it-right step lets the garage respond before it goes live.

STEP 1Tell the garage, in writingSay what is wrong with the van since the service and what you want done. For a consumer, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires reasonable care and skill; for a business, the contract terms apply too.
STEP 2The Locufy make-it-right stepBelow four stars, you decide whether the complaint about the van mechanic goes to the garage first. We follow it through, and then you review.
STEP 3Escalate itAn accredited business can be taken to The Motor Ombudsman after eight weeks without a fix. For a garage outside the scheme, the consumer helpline hears the van mechanic complaint and can refer it to Trading Standards — Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claimsIf the van mechanic still is not settled, the limits are £10,000 in England and Wales (small claims track), £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland (small claims court). Keep every message and invoice as evidence.

Hiring a van mechanic: questions people ask

No. No UK nation licenses mechanics. The legal standard is reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for consumers; business customers rely on the contract.

Only if the business uses goods vehicles over 3,500 kg gross plated weight. Most panel vans are under it; check the plate.

No certificate — an itemised invoice and an entry in the service record with the date and mileage.

Usually £200–£700 per service, with £300 as a typical figure. See the van servicing price guide for what pushes a price up or down, and search above for van mechanics in your area.

Vans have their own MOT classes and maximum fees, set by weight. In Northern Ireland, light goods vehicles are first tested at three years old at DVA centres.

Tell the garage in writing. If the work fell short of reasonable care and skill, ask for it to be redone at their cost.
