BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
You will not find bed bug specialists on any statutory register, because none exists in the four nations, and no licence is needed to trade. The checks are the products, the method and the follow-up.
Ask for the treatment plan and the products before booking.
Professional-only products
HSE says biocides meant only for professional users must never be used by the public, because professional users must have had the right information, instruction and training — and some professional products also need specific certification. A bed bug specialist using residual insecticides should be able to say which product and what training covers it.
Ask for the product name and the certificate or training that covers it. hse.gov.uk →
Non-chemical methods
HSE's biocides guidance asks users to consider alternatives first, and names changing the temperature — extreme heat such as steam — as one that may work in some cases.
Ask whether heat or steam treatment is offered and how it is checked. hse.gov.uk →
Label conditions
Products authorised under the GB Biocidal Products Regulation carry labels setting how much to apply, where, how often and how to dispose of what is left, and the user must follow them.
Ask the bed bug specialist what the label says about re-entering rooms and bedding. hse.gov.uk →
VAT
Bed bug treatment is charged VAT at the standard 20%. Once a pest business takes more than £90,000 a year it must be registered, charge the 20% on every visit in the course and show it separately on the paperwork.
Ask for the VAT number when the treatment is booked and check the 20% appears separately for each visit billed. gov.uk →

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a bed bug specialist: questions people ask
Bed bug specialists need no licence and appear on no official register. Professional-only insecticides must be used by trained professional users, and some need certification.
HSE says the public should never use biocides intended only for professionals; use an amateur product or a professional.
Roughly £204–£452 a treatment, typically £279. What you pay depends on the job; the bed bug treatment price guide shows why, and the search above finds bed bug specialists near you.
HSE lists extreme heat such as steam as a method that may be effective in some cases; ask the specialist how they check results.
Often not; treatment and an encasement may save it. Ask before buying new.
Usually after a two-visit course, a few weeks apart.
