BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

In all four nations wasp nest specialists can trade without a licence, and no official register lists them. The checks are the product, the method and the access.

Ask for a name, an invoice and how they treat the nest.

Professional-only products

Professional-only biocides, such as professional insecticide dusts, may only be used by people trained in them; HSE adds that some professional products also need specific certification. Ask the wasp nest specialist for the product and the training record.

Ask for the product name and the certificate or training that covers it. hse.gov.uk →

Label limits: no beehives

HSE lists conditions labels can set, such as not treating beehives or areas with roosting bats; a specialist must follow the label.

If you are not sure it is wasps, ask the wasp nest specialist to check before treating. hse.gov.uk →

Working at height

The Work at Height Regulations 2005, enforced by HSE, require work at height to be planned and done by competent people with suitable equipment.

Ask how they will reach a nest under the eaves or in a roof. hse.gov.uk →

VAT

Wasp nest treatment is standard-rated at 20%. A pest business turning over more than £90,000 a year must register, charge the 20% on the treatment, any access kit and re-treatment, and show it on its own line.

Ask the wasp nest specialist for the VAT number and check the 20% appears apart from the nest price. gov.uk →

“Is this a wasp nest, or bees?”

A good answer: A confident identification from a photo or visit; bees are not treated like wasps.

“What will you use on the wasp nest?”

A good answer: A named insecticide, applied at the entrance.

“Will you take the nest down afterwards?”

A good answer: Usually it is treated and left to die off; removal is extra and not always needed.

“How will you reach the wasp nest?”

A good answer: A plan for ladders, poles or a platform.

“How long until the nest is dead?”

A good answer: Usually within a day or two of treatment.

“Is a second treatment of the nest included?”

A good answer: A free return within a set period if activity continues.

“Is it safe for children and pets?”

A good answer: Instructions on keeping clear and for how long.

Leave the reviewReviews of the wasp nest specialist on Locufy come only from booked jobs. If something was left wrong, the make-it-right step comes first.

STEP 1Tell the wasp nest specialist, in writingSay what is wrong with the treatment and what you want done. A trader owes you reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015; if that was missing, ask for the work to be redone at their cost or for money off.
STEP 2Make it right through LocufyGive fewer than four stars and you are asked whether the wasp nest specialist should get the chance to fix it first; we follow it through before the review goes up.
STEP 3Unsafe use of a pest control productHSE regulates biocides in Great Britain; concerns about how a wasp nest specialist used one can be raised with it. Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133, England and Wales), Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060) and Consumerline in Northern Ireland (0300 123 6262) advise and can refer a trader to Trading Standards.
STEP 4Money still in disputeA claim against the wasp nest specialist can go to court without a solicitor: up to £10,000 on the small claims track in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under simple procedure in Scotland, and up to £5,000 in the small claims court in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a wasp nest specialist: questions people ask

Nothing in the law licenses wasp nest specialists or puts them on a register. Professional-only insecticides must be used by trained users.

A good specialist identifies bees first and will not treat them as wasps; biocide labels can forbid treating beehives.

£75–£200 a nest, typically around £119. The wasp nest removal price guide explains what pushes it up or down; type your town above to compare wasp nest specialists near you.

Usually not; a treated nest dies off and is not reused.

Usually within a day or two.

No — HSE says the public should never use biocides intended only for professionals. Amateur products, used to the label, are the alternative.
