THE 60-SECOND VERSION

Hiring an insulation installer in five steps

  1. Are you on the SEAI Registered Contractor List, and what is your number?A number you can look up yourself before you agree a price — post-Installation Services — after installation, some professionals offer follow-up services, including inspections and maintenance checks.
  2. How does size of the area to be insulated change the price?Double the area and you are close to double the time. — ask before the quote rather than after.
  3. How does type of insulation material used change the price? The spec sheet is where most of the cost difference sits. — ask before the quote rather than after.
  4. How does any preparatory work needed change the price? It is checked on the visit because it changes the method. — ask before the quote rather than after.
  5. What is not included?Energy Efficiency Upgrades — insulation installers often provide recommendations for energy efficiency upgrades, such as sealing air leaks and improving ventilation — get the exclusions named in the quote, because a insulation installer job is priced on what was agreed and not on what was assumed.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

SEAI Registered Contractor List

REGISTERED FOR WHAT, EXACTLY. Contractors may only carry out the measures they are registered for, so a contractor on the list for insulation is not thereby approved for a heat pump. A renewable installer registers with SEAI first and then adds heat pump or solar PV. For solar PV the INSTALLER applies to ESB Networks for the grid connection, not you. Registration is not a licence to trade — anyone may install insulation. It is MANDATORY TO GET THE GRANT, which is the practical constraint for almost every homeowner.

Search the SEAI Registered Contractor List for the name or the registration number before you agree a price. seai.ie →

Insurance

Expect public liability; grant work also carries SEAI's own code of practice. From a company, ask for the insurer, the limit and the VAT number, and ask who actually attends: the team that turns up may be employed, subcontracted or both, and only one of those is supervised by the firm you are paying.

Ask to see the current certificate of insurance — the insurer's name, the limit and the date it runs to.

Trader or private seller

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 a trader must tell you they are a trader, and your consumer rights — work carried out with reasonable skill and care, and a cooling-off period on a contract agreed in your home or online — apply to traders and not to private sellers. On Locufy the trader status is shown on the profile.

Look for the trader badge on the Locufy profile, and ask anyone else for it in writing before you agree a price.

Identity

Providers on Locufy prove who they are with photo ID before they can be booked; the ID-checked badge shows who has done it, and the document itself is deleted once the check is made. For a insulation installer coming into your home it is the cheapest check there is.

Look for the ID-checked badge on the card, before you message anyone.

VAT

VAT at 13.5%, the reduced rate Revenue publishes for this service. Ask whether the price you were given includes it. A trader under the €42,500 registration threshold does not charge it; one over it must, and must show it separately.

Ask whether the figure you were given includes it, and for the VAT number if they are registered — Revenue publishes the rate for this service. revenue.ie →

Hiring an insulation installer: questions people ask

The cost of insulation installation can vary based on factors such as the size of the area to be insulated, the type of insulation material used, and any preparatory work needed. For instance, spray foam insulation may be more expensive than fiberglass batts due to its application method.

The duration of the insulation installation process can range from a few hours to a couple of days, depending on the complexity and size of the job. For example, a small attic may take just a few hours, while a full home retrofit could take longer.

Same-day insulation installation is typically available for urgent situations, but it depends on the contractor's schedule and the type of insulation required. It's best to contact local installers directly to inquire about availability.

Yes, many insulation installers can handle related jobs, such as air sealing or energy audits, in conjunction with insulation installation. Booking multiple services may also lead to discounts or reduced overall costs.

Insulation installers generally do not perform structural repairs or electrical work. If any repairs or modifications to the building structure are needed before insulation can be installed, these should be handled by a qualified contractor.

Search the name or the registration number. If the number does not resolve to the name on the quote, stop there.
