How to pay less
- Book a 30-minute massage focused on your back and shoulders if that is the problem area
- Ask about a block of massage sessions, which many therapists discount
- Choose an independent massage therapist rather than a hotel spa for a lower price
Before you book
- Tell the massage therapist about injuries, pregnancy, blood clots or skin conditions
- Check the massage therapist is qualified and insured; some are on the CNHC register
- In Greater London check the massage premises hold a special treatment licence
- Say what pressure you like and speak up during the massage if it is too firm
Massage Therapist cost: questions people ask
Usually £40 to £80, with £50 the national average. Specialist styles and London therapists cost more.
Most people book 60 minutes. A 30-minute session suits one area, and 90 minutes allows a slower full-body treatment.
There is no statutory register, but many join voluntary registers such as the CNHC. In Greater London, premises offering massage usually need a special treatment licence from the council.
Massage is not a VAT-exempt health service, so a VAT-registered business includes VAT at 20% in its price. Many sole traders fall below the threshold and charge none.
Hot stones, cupping and aromatherapy blends are often charged on top of the standard massage price.
