What moves the price
- Size of the marquee — a frame marquee for 150 guests costs several times more than a small party marquee
- Flooring — hard flooring and carpet are priced per square metre and add a large share of the cost
- Linings and lighting — ivory linings, chandeliers and festoon lights turn a bare marquee into a venue
- Heating and power — a marquee on a spring or autumn evening may need heaters and a generator
- Ground and access — sloping lawns, hard standing or narrow access take longer to build on
- Season — summer weekends are the busiest for marquee hire companies
WHAT YOU GET
What a marquee hire booking includes
Takes: Erection usually takes one to two days before the event, with dismantling a day or so after. Not included: Flooring, linings, lighting, heating, furniture, toilets, a generator and a catering tent are often priced on top of the basic marquee.

How to pay less
- Choose a smaller marquee and seat guests at long tables rather than round tables
- Skip hard flooring on a level, dry lawn if the marquee company says matting will do
- Hold the marquee event outside peak summer weekends for more choice and better prices
Before you book
- Check whether you need landowner or local council permission, especially for a large or long-standing marquee
- Ask the marquee company about its public liability insurance and how it anchors on your ground
- Plan power, toilets and catering space, which are usually separate from the marquee
- Agree the build and take-down dates and any damage deposit in writing
