What moves the price
- Band size — every extra musician in the live band adds a fee, so a five-piece costs far more than a trio
- Sets played — two or three 45-minute sets are standard; extra sets or an early start cost more
- Sound and lighting — a band bringing its own engineer, PA and lighting rig charges more
- Horns and extra vocalists — a horn section or male and female singers push the band into the top bracket
- Travel and accommodation — a band travelling far needs fuel, a van and sometimes hotel rooms
- Peak dates — summer Saturdays and New Year's Eve are booked first and priced highest

How to pay less
- Book a smaller line-up, such as a trio, instead of a five-piece live band
- Choose a Friday, Sunday or winter date, when bands may discount
- Book a live band based near the venue to cut travel and accommodation
Before you book
- Check the venue's power, stage space, sound limiter and curfew before booking a live band
- Ask for live video of the band, not just studio recordings
- Confirm the band carries public liability insurance and PAT-tested gear
- Agree set times, a hot meal for the band and the cost of an extra set
Live Band cost: questions people ask
Usually £500–£4,500 per booking in the UK, with about £1,000 typical for a function band. Small line-ups midweek sit low; large bands with horns on summer Saturdays sit high.
Most play two or three 45-minute sets, with a DJ playlist between and after. An earlier start or extra set costs more.
Venues putting on live music for the public usually need a premises licence and a PPL PRS music licence. Many venues also fit a sound limiter, which the band must work within.
Most bands will learn one first dance song, sometimes for a fee. Ask early, as rehearsal time is limited.
Extra sets, acoustic afternoon sets, new songs, accommodation and long-distance travel are commonly charged separately.
