What moves the price
- Volume shipped — international removals are priced by cubic metres, so every room you take adds container space
- Road or sea — a part-load to Europe by road costs far less than a sole-use container to Australia
- Shared or sole-use container — groupage shares the space and the cost, a private container is quicker but dearer
- Door-to-door or port-to-port — delivery from the arrival port to your new home is a separate removal leg
- Packing and export wrapping — sea freight needs heavier packing, which adds crew days to the move
- Customs and destination charges — duties, inspections and port fees abroad are often outside the UK quote

How to pay less
- Sell or donate bulky furniture before the survey so the international removal is quoted for less volume
- Choose a shared container if your belongings fill only part of one and your arrival date is flexible
- Ask for door-to-door and port-to-port removal quotes side by side so you can see what each leaves out
Before you book
- Check the destination's customs rules on household goods, food, plants and alcohol before packing
- Ask whether the removal firm is a member of a trade body with an overseas division and advance payment protection
- Take out transit insurance for the shipment, as basic carrier liability covers very little of a container's contents
- Keep passports, documents and valuables out of the container and travel with them yourself
International Removals cost: questions people ask
£1,500–£12,000, with £4,500 a fair middle figure. A part-load from London to northern Europe is the cheapest kind of move; a sole-use container to the far side of the world costs the most.
Packing and loading take two to five days. Road moves within Europe arrive in days to a couple of weeks, while sea containers to Australia, Asia or the Americas take several weeks.
Many countries let you bring used household goods in free of duty if you are moving your residence there, but each has its own paperwork and conditions. Your mover should confirm the rules for your destination before anything is packed.
Often, yes — a car can share a sole-use container or go separately by roll-on roll-off ferry. It brings its own customs, registration and import tax rules at the other end.
Destination duties and taxes, port inspections, transit insurance and storage at either end are the costs most often left out.
