How to pay less
- Ask your GP about NHS counselling or talking therapy services in your nation
- Ask counsellors whether they offer reduced fees or a sliding scale
- Look at low-cost counselling from training placements and charities
Before you book
- Check the counsellor is on a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, such as BACP
- Use the first counselling session to judge whether you feel comfortable with the counsellor
- Agree the fee, cancellation policy and how many counselling sessions you expect
- If you are in crisis, contact your GP, NHS 111 or emergency services rather than waiting for counselling to begin
