What moves the price
- Coat length — long-haired breeds such as Persians need far more cat grooming time
- Matting — a matted coat needs careful shaving, which adds to the groom
- Service — a brush and nail trim costs less than a full groom or a lion cut
- Temperament — nervous or difficult cats may need shorter, repeated sessions
- Size of cat — large breeds such as Maine Coons take longer to groom
- Mobile or salon — a cat groomer who visits your home may charge for travel

How to pay less
- Book cat grooming before mats form, as dematting and shaving cost extra
- Brush a long-haired cat at home between grooms to keep the coat free of tangles
- Choose a hygiene trim rather than a full groom when that is all your cat needs
Before you book
- Tell the cat groomer about health problems, stress or past reactions to grooming
- Ask whether there is an extra charge if your cat is matted
- Check the groomer's experience with cats, as cat grooming differs from dog grooming
- Ask your vet about severely matted or very stressed cats, as sedation may be safer
Cat Grooming cost: questions people ask
£30–£150 per groom, with about £90 typical for a full groom. A brush and nail trim for a short-haired cat costs the least; a lion cut or heavy dematting on a large long-haired cat costs the most.
One to two hours. Groomers often split very stressful grooms into more than one appointment.
Mats pull at the skin and can hide sores. When they are too tight to comb out, careful shaving is kinder and safer.
Only on a vet's advice. Most cats are groomed without sedation, but a vet can help with very stressed or badly matted cats.
Sedation, flea treatments and vet care for skin problems are separate. Severe matting may carry an extra charge.
