BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
You will not find wig fitters on any official register in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, because none exists. What you check in a wig fitter is training, insurance and how they work.
Ask how many years they have done this kind of wig fitting, and look through photos of their own clients.
Insurance that covers the wig fitting
Without public liability insurance, a wig fitter who injures you has to pay out of their own pocket, so ask whether the wig fitting appears on the schedule of their insurance.
Ask the wig fitter for the insurer's name and the schedule line that covers the wig fitting.
Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015
When a wig fitter sells you a wig fitting as a business, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 treats them as a trader who must work with reasonable care and skill; a wig fitting that falls short can be redone or the price cut.
Check the wig fitter's profile for the trader badge, and keep every message about the booking. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
Wig fitting, customising and styling are standard-rated at 20% from a VAT-registered wig fitter. A business over £90,000 of taxable turnover must register and show VAT apart on the fitting.
Ask the wig fitter for a VAT number and for VAT shown apart from the fitting price. gov.uk →
A good answer: Regularly, with photos — a wig fitter who knows lace fronts may not know medical wigs.
A good answer: A reason based on your scalp and lifestyle, and an adhesive patch test if you have sensitive skin.
A good answer: Each part of the wig fitting named as in or out.
A good answer: Yes, and the wig fitter should offer it for medical hair loss.
A good answer: A demonstration and the remover to use.
A good answer: An interval and a price for each re-install.
A good answer: Come back and the wig fitter adjusts it free within an agreed time.

- Who actually attends: the wig fitter you booked, or a stylist who customises the lace, and whether each is employed or subcontracted
- The wig fitter's VAT number, with VAT apart from the wig, the fitting and the styling
Walk away if
- No question about adhesive allergies
- No private space offered for medical hair loss
- Removing a glued wig by pulling it
- Extras added to the bill that were not quoted

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a wig fitter: questions people ask
No. Nothing in UK law licenses or registers wig fitters, which is why training, insurance and their own work are what you check before a wig fitting.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a wig fitting that was not done with reasonable care and skill can be redone free or partly refunded. Raise it quickly and in writing.
£40–£150 per service, typically around £70. Lace customising, glued or sewn methods and medical wig services change it. Check the wig fitting price guide for the full picture, then search your town above for wig fitters close by.
Ask your hospital team what help is available for a wig, then ask the wig fitter whether they work with medical wigs and offer a private room.
Ask the wig fitter: the time depends on the adhesive and your skin. Come back for a re-install rather than stretching it.
Take it off safely and tell the fitter in writing. A fitting done without reasonable care and skill can be put right or the price reduced.
