BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

You will not find hair extension technicians on any official register in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, because none exists. That leaves the hair extension technician's training, insurance and photos of real work as your checks.

Look at their recent work on hair like yours and ask about their training.

Insurance that covers the hair extensions

Insurance for hair extension technicians is sold treatment by treatment, so a hair extension technician's policy that covers a salon may stop at your front door. Public liability insurance is the part that pays for an injury.

Ask the hair extension technician for the insurer's name and the schedule line that covers the hair extensions.

Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

When a hair extension technician sells you a hair extensions as a business, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 treats them as a trader who must work with reasonable care and skill; a hair extensions that falls short can be redone or the price cut.

Find the trader badge on the profile, and keep the confirmation with the price on it. legislation.gov.uk →

Training in the method

No register applies to the method either, so training is a check you make yourself: a hair extension technician should be trained in the specific system they fit.

Ask which method they trained in, when, and to see photos of grown-out sets.

VAT

Fitting hair extensions is standard-rated at 20% when the technician is VAT-registered. A hair extension technician whose turnover passes £90,000 must register, charge VAT on the fitting and refits, and show it separately.

Ask for the technician's VAT number and check the receipt shows the VAT apart from the fitting price. gov.uk →

“Which extension method suits my hair, and why?”

A good answer: An answer that looks at your density and scalp, not just the method the hair extension technician sells most.

“What hair do you use, and is it in the price?”

A good answer: Human or synthetic, the grade, and whether the hair is part of the hair extensions price.

“How often will I need refits, and what do they cost?”

A good answer: An interval and a price for each refit.

“Can I see extensions you have fitted that have grown out?”

A good answer: Photos weeks later, where the bonds or tapes show how well they sit.

“What aftercare do I need?”

A good answer: Brushing, washing and sleeping advice, and the products the hair extension technician recommends.

“How will they come out, and does removal cost extra?”

A good answer: A method and price for safe removal of the hair extensions.

“What if I get scalp pain or shedding?”

A good answer: Come straight back, and the technician checks and adjusts free.

Getting the quote right

  • The method, the amount of hair and its length
  • The hair itself — type, grade, included or extra
  • Fitting, cut and blend, as one figure
  • Refit and removal prices
  • Who actually attends: the hair extension technician trained in your method, or a colleague, and whether they are employed or subcontracted
  • The technician's VAT number, with VAT apart from the hair, the fitting and the refit

Walk away if

  • No consultation or strand test before fitting
  • They cannot say where the hair comes from or what grade it is
  • Tension or pain at fitting brushed off
  • No removal plan, or "just cut them out"

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the receipt and the hair detailsMethod, hair type and amount: a refit or a complaint needs them.
Check your scalpSoreness or bumps along the rows: go back to the hair extension technician quickly.
Book the first refitOn the date they gave; leaving it too long can damage your own hair.
Leave the reviewLocufy only takes reviews from people who booked. If the hair extensions is not right, use the make-it-right step first so the hair extension technician can put it right before the review goes up.

STEP 1Tell the hair extension technician, in writingSay what is wrong with the hair extensions and whether you want it redone or money back. A trader owes you reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, so a hair extensions that falls short can be put right or partly refunded.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyGive the hair extensions under four stars and we ask whether to send it to the hair extension technician first; we follow it through with them, and then you review.
STEP 3No regulator — Trading StandardsNo body licenses a hair extension technician, so a hair extensions dispute you cannot settle goes to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060) or Consumerline in Northern Ireland (0300 123 6262).
STEP 4Small claims, if it comes to moneyIf the hair extension technician will not refund or redo the hair extensions, you can claim without a solicitor: up to £10,000 on the small claims track in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under simple procedure in Scotland, and up to £5,000 in the small claims court in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a hair extension technician: questions people ask

No — there is no licence and no register for hair extension technicians anywhere in the UK. Judge them on their work and their insurance instead.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says a hair extension technician who trades must use reasonable care and skill. Put the problem in writing; a redo comes first, then a price reduction if the hair extensions cannot be fixed in reasonable time.

£200–£1,000 per set, typically around £465. The method, the length and the quality of human hair matter most; clip-ins cost far less. More detail sits in the hair extensions price guide, and typing your town above brings up hair extension technicians you can book.

They can if they are too heavy, too tight or left too long. Ask the hair extension technician how they size the sections and when to come back.

Ask before you buy. Hair bought for a service is part of the contract; the terms should say what happens to unused hair.

Tell the technician in writing. Extensions that fall out early may not have been fitted with reasonable care and skill; ask for a refit or a price reduction.
