BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No licence or register applies to steel fabricators anywhere in the UK; structural steelwork is part of building work that needs building regulations approval and an engineer's design.
Before work starts, ask who will apply for any approval the steelwork needs. gov.uk →
Building regulations approval
A steel beam or column that carries load is structural steelwork, designed by an engineer and checked by building control as part of the approved work. Under a full plans application in England, building control should issue the completion certificate for the steelwork within 8 weeks of the work ending, if it meets the regulations.
Ask for the building control application or reference for the steelwork up front. gov.uk →
Building warrant (Scotland)
If you live in Scotland and the steelwork needs a warrant, getting it is your job as owner — the council can fine you and have unwarranted work removed. In Northern Ireland, notify the council's building control ahead of the steelwork.
Ask to see the Scottish warrant, or the Northern Ireland building control reference, before the steelwork starts. mygov.scot →
Insurance and trader status
Public liability insurance is the norm for the steelwork; ask who the insurer is and the cover limit. Your Consumer Rights Act 2015 protections for the steelwork apply because you are dealing with a trader, and if you agree the steelwork at home or online the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 usually give you 14 days to cancel — but you pay for any work you asked to start within those days, and goods made to your own specification are outside the right.
See the insurance certificate before you confirm the steelwork; the Locufy profile shows the trader and ID-checked badges.
VAT
Steel fabrication and installation is standard-rated, so VAT is 20%; a firm with taxable turnover over £90,000 must be VAT-registered, charge that 20% and show it as a separate line on the quote and invoice.
Ask for the VAT number, and look for VAT as its own line on the steelwork quote. gov.uk →
A good answer: If yes, built to an engineer's design and approved by building control.
A good answer: Section size, grade and finish named.
A good answer: The fabricator or the builder, with temporary support planned.
A good answer: Galvanising, primer or powder coat, stated.
A good answer: If so, how fire risk is managed.
A good answer: A date, so the builder can plan.
Getting the quote right
- Drawing reference and sizes
- Steel grade and finish
- Delivery, lifting and installation
- Connections, plates and fixings
- Who actually attends — the fabricators and the fitting crew, employed or subcontracted — and the business's VAT number, with VAT at 20% shown as its own line
Walk away if
- Makes a structural beam with no engineer's design
- No finish on outdoor steel
- No drawing
- Unclear who installs and supports it
- No written price
What a steel fabricator costs: £400–£3,000 per job
