THE 60-SECOND VERSION
Hiring a sewing and knitting teacher in five steps
- Say what you want to makeA cushion, a skirt, mending, a first scarf, or crochet. A sewing and knitting teacher plans the class around the project.
- See the check before the first sewing classEnhanced DBS, PVG or AccessNI depending on where you live. A parent cannot apply for it; a sewing and knitting teacher can show it in a minute.
- Check the teaching, not just the knowledgeA sewing and knitting teacher should describe how a typical sewing class runs and how they find out what a student is missing.
- Try one class before a blockA first sewing class should end with a clear idea of where you are and what comes next. If it does not, try another sewing and knitting teacher.
- Get the terms in a messageBefore you pay for a single class or a course: machines and materials provided, the project, and the refund rule. A message on Locufy is enough.
BEFORE YOU BOOK

No register applies
None of the four UK nations licenses or registers sewing and knitting teachers; no qualification is needed to teach sewing and knitting at a studio, a yarn shop or a community room. Training, a portfolio and teaching experience are things you ask about, not things on a register.
Ask for the qualification and where it was gained, plus a reference from a current learner.
Vetting for lessons with a child
Regulated activity in England and Wales starts when someone teaches or instructs a child on more than three days in a 30-day spell, or overnight; a sewing and knitting teacher teaching at a weekly class passes that easily, so the enhanced DBS check with the children's barred list is the one to ask for. Since 1 September 2026, being supervised by someone else no longer takes a sewing and knitting teacher out of that rule. Scotland's system is the PVG scheme — mygov.scot lists tutors and instructors engaged by a parent among the roles to check — and Northern Ireland's is an enhanced AccessNI check with the children's barred list, which a self-employed sewing and knitting teacher gets through an Umbrella Body.
Ask a sewing and knitting teacher to show you the certificate before the first sewing class, and write down its date — there is no official expiry. PVG proof in Scotland; the AccessNI certificate from their nidirect account in Northern Ireland. gov.uk →
Training, portfolio and insurance
No qualification is required to teach sewing or knitting, and no register lists who does. Training, years of teaching and their own makes are what to look for. HSE says a business with employees will probably need employers' liability insurance; ask a sewing and knitting teacher working alone whether they hold public liability insurance.
Ask to see the sewing and knitting teacher's own work and to know who insures them. hse.gov.uk →
The terms for a single class or a course
Paying for a single class or a course makes it a consumer contract: the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says a sewing and knitting teacher must use reasonable care and skill. The usual 14-day right to cancel a distance or doorstep contract usually does not apply to leisure activities booked for a set date or period (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, regulation 28); read a sewing and knitting teacher's own terms before you pay. Most arguments with sewing and knitting teachers are about fabric or yarn charged on top without warning.
Get machines and materials provided, the project, and the refund rule in writing — a Locufy message counts — before you pay for a single class or a course. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
Sewing and knitting classes are exempt only when a sole trader or partner teaches them personally, textiles being ordinarily taught in schools; classes from a shop or studio company, or its employed staff, are standard-rated. A business over the £90,000 registration threshold must then charge VAT and show it as a separate line.
Ask whether the sewing and knitting teacher runs the class as a sole trader or a shop or studio company does, and for the VAT number if VAT is added. gov.uk →
A good answer: Yes, and dated. For sewing classes with a child that is the level to see — PVG membership in Scotland, AccessNI in Northern Ireland.
A good answer: Yes or no, and which kind — so you can practise at home on something similar.
A good answer: A clear list, and the cost if not.
A good answer: A named project you take home.
A good answer: A number; machine classes need small groups.
A good answer: Notice periods that fit a single class or a course, written down, with the sewing and knitting teacher's own cancellations made up.
Getting the quote right
- Who actually attends to teach — the sewing and knitting teacher named, or shop staff, employed or subcontracted
- Price and length of each sewing class, stated together
- Materials and equipment: what the sewing and knitting teacher provides and what you buy
- How a single class or a course works, and the refund if it is cut short
- Any extra for where the sewing classes happen — at a studio, a yarn shop or a community room
- The VAT number if the studio or shop charges VAT, with VAT on the class as its own line
Walk away if
- They brush off the DBS, PVG or AccessNI question for sewing classes with your child
- The sewing and knitting teacher cannot say in writing what the class includes until you arrive
- No project or materials list before you book
- A long sewing or knitting course paid up front, with no written refund terms
What a sewing and knitting teacher costs: £38–£82 per class

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a sewing and knitting teacher: questions people ask
No law makes every sewing and knitting teacher hold one. But teaching a child at a weekly class becomes regulated activity in England and Wales once it passes three days in 30, and a barred person must not do it — so ask for the enhanced DBS check with the children's barred list, PVG membership in Scotland, or an enhanced AccessNI check in Northern Ireland.
Not one of the four UK nations keeps a register of people who teach sewing and knitting. Ask about training and how long they have taught.
£38–£82 a class, with £40 typical for a two-hour knitting class; full-day sewing courses cost most. The sewing and knitting classes price guide breaks it down; search your town above to see teachers who work near you.
Not from a sewing and knitting teacher working as a sole trader or partner: textiles is taught in schools, so that tuition is exempt. A yarn shop or studio company, or its employed staff, is standard-rated and adds VAT once over £90,000.
Not for a class that provides machines; ask before you buy.
Look for a children's class with a vetted teacher.
