BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
You will not find pond maintenance specialists on any statutory register, because none exists in the four nations, and no licence is needed to trade. The checks are experience with fish and wildlife ponds, insurance and the waste.
Ask how they keep fish safe during a clean.
Waste carrier registration
Taking pond sludge and cut plants off your property makes the pond maintenance specialist a waste carrier, and every nation requires carriers to register — the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA or the NIEA, depending on where you live.
Get the registration number in writing and look it up by number, name or postcode. environment.data.gov.uk →
Electrics for the pump
Wiring a new or moved pond pump is electrical installation work. In England and Wales it has to meet the Building Regulations, and in Wales outdoor electrical work is notifiable; an electrician on the Registered Competent Person Electrical register can certify it rather than you paying building control.
Ask who wires the supply and which certificate you will receive. electricalcompetentperson.co.uk →
Public liability insurance
Insurance is not a legal requirement for a pond maintenance specialist. Public liability insurance matters anyway: a damaged liner or a lost pond of fish is expensive to put right.
Ask to see the current insurance certificate, with its limit.
VAT
Pond maintenance is standard-rated, so VAT on it is 20%. A pond maintenance business above the £90,000 threshold must be registered, charge the 20% on each visit and on UV lamps or filter media, and show it separately.
Ask for the pond specialist's VAT number and check each visit invoice lists the 20% apart. gov.uk →
A good answer: A holding tank with pond water, aeration and shade, and the fish back the same day.
A good answer: Only if needed. A partial clean with sludge pumped out keeps the water's balance.
A good answer: Spread on beds if you want it, or taken away by a registered carrier.
A good answer: A test for ammonia, nitrite and pH, with the results explained.
A good answer: A list: filter, pump, UV, plants, debris, water level and test.
A good answer: Plugged into an existing safe outdoor supply, yes; new wiring by a certified electrician.
A good answer: Spring or early autumn, avoiding spawning and hot spells.
Getting the quote right
- What each visit includes, and how often
- Sludge and plant removal, and where the waste goes
- Fish handling: holding tank and time out of the pond
- Parts such as a UV lamp or filter media, priced
- Who actually attends each visit and handles the fish, and whether they are employed or subcontracted
- The VAT number, and 20% VAT shown separately from the visit price and any parts
Walk away if
- Fish left in a bucket in the sun
- Full drain and pressure-wash of a wildlife pond
- Sludge taken away with no carrier number
- New wiring by someone who cannot certify it
What a pond maintenance specialist costs: £80–£300 per visit

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a pond maintenance specialist: questions people ask
No permit, licence or register applies to pond maintenance specialists. Taking sludge and plants away needs a waste carrier registration.
Swapping a pump on an existing safe supply needs no certificate; new outdoor wiring is electrical work that should be certified.
Most pay around £100 out of a range of £80–£300 a visit. For what moves the figure, see the pond maintenance price guide; for local pond maintenance specialists, search above.
A full clean every few years; light maintenance each season.
Not if they are kept in pond water with air and shade and returned the same day.
Yes, it is rich in nutrients and makes a good mulch.
