No register applies
There is no register to search for mobile spray tanners in any of the four UK nations, and no licence to show. The council licences that do exist are for tattooing and piercing, not for the work of a mobile spray tanner.
Ask to see their training for this exact treatment, and confirm their insurance.
Insurance that covers the spray tan at home
Cover is treatment-specific: one mobile spray tanner's policy may include the spray tan at home but not home visits, another the reverse. Public liability insurance is what pays if you are hurt.
Ask who insures them, and whether the spray tan at home is named on the cover.
Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015
A mobile spray tanner who trades, not a friend doing a favour, owes you reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — and a spray tan at home done badly gives you the right to a redo or money off.
See whether the profile carries the trader badge before you pay, and screenshot what was agreed. legislation.gov.uk →
Cancellation rights for a home booking
A mobile spray tanner booked online, by phone or at your door is covered by the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013: 14 days from booking to cancel, and if you asked for the spray tan at home sooner you pay for what was done.
Ask the mobile spray tanner for the cancellation terms in writing. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
A spray tan at home is standard-rated at 20% when the mobile spray tanner is registered. Registration is required above £90,000 of taxable turnover, and VAT must then be shown separately on the receipt for each tan.
Ask the mobile spray tanner whether they are VAT-registered, and if so for the VAT number on the receipt. gov.uk →

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a mobile spray tanner: questions people ask
No. Nothing in UK law licenses or registers mobile spray tanners, which is why training, insurance and their own work are what you check before a spray tan at home.
You can ask for the spray tan at home to be done again at no cost, and if that fails or is impossible, for a reduction that can go up to the full price (Consumer Rights Act 2015).
£50–£85 per session, typically around £55. Travel, the solution, group bookings and London rates decide it. What pushes it up or down is set out in the mobile spray tan price guide; search your town above to compare mobile spray tanners.
You normally get 14 days: the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 cover a spray tan at home booked at a distance or away from the trader's premises. Ask for it sooner and you pay for whatever was done.
It can without protection. Ask the mobile spray tanner what they put down.
Tell them in writing and ask for their insurer's details; public liability covers damage.
