How to hire a meal preparation carer in the UK
Checked October 2026 · https://locufy.com/uk/how-to-hire/meal-preparation-for-elderly
The five steps
- Ask what the visit includes. Cooking only, or personal care too.
- Check registration if personal care is included. CQC, CIW, the Care Inspectorate or RQIA.
- Share diet needs. Allergies, swallowing problems, preferences.
- Agree who buys the food. And how money is handled.
- Ask how appetite is recorded. Poor appetite is an early warning.
Check before you book
- CQC registration (England): Search the agency on CQC's site, open the location that runs your care, check 'personal care' is listed and read the latest rating.
- Care Inspectorate Wales, Care Inspectorate or RQIA: Wales: CIW's service directory. Scotland: the Care Inspectorate's find-care directory, with grades. Northern Ireland: RQIA's register of domiciliary care agencies.
- Criminal record check — DBS, PVG or AccessNI: Ask to see the meal preparation carer's certificate or PVG proof and read when it was issued.
- Introductory agency, or you as the employer: Ask in writing whether the agency employs and supervises the carer or only introduces them, and who you pay.
- VAT: Ask for the VAT number and whether your relative's assessment means the meal visits are exempt.

- “Who buys the food, and how is money handled?” Receipts for every purchase.

- “How will you tell us about poor appetite?” A note and a call.
- “Which check do your carers hold?” DBS with adults' barred list, PVG or AccessNI.
