BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

The law in all four UK nations is silent on henna and mehndi artists — no licence, no register, no required qualification. The council licences that do exist are for tattooing and piercing, not for the work of a henna and mehndi artist.

Ask the henna and mehndi artist for the training certificate for this treatment and the insurer that covers it.

Insurance that covers the mehndi

The insurance norm for henna and mehndi artists is cover written for each treatment, so a henna and mehndi artist whose schedule leaves out the mehndi is not insured for it.

Ask to see the policy schedule, and look for the mehndi on it.

Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

When a henna and mehndi artist sells you a mehndi as a business, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 treats them as a trader who must work with reasonable care and skill; a mehndi that falls short can be redone or the price cut.

Find the trader badge on the profile, and keep the confirmation with the price on it. legislation.gov.uk →

Booking terms under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013

A henna and mehndi artist booked online or by phone makes a distance contract: you have 14 days to cancel, unless the mehndi happens inside that time at your request. Deposits and late-cancellation terms need to be in writing to bind you.

Ask the henna and mehndi artist for the deposit, balance and cancellation terms in one message before you pay. legislation.gov.uk →

VAT

Bridal and guest mehndi are standard-rated at 20% from a registered henna and mehndi artist. Turnover over £90,000 makes registration compulsory, and then VAT goes on the mehndi, shown as its own line on the booking invoice.

Ask whether the artist has a VAT number, and if so, whether the quoted hourly or per-hand price includes the VAT. gov.uk →

“What is in your henna paste?”

A good answer: Every ingredient named by the henna and mehndi artist — natural henna, lemon, sugar, oils — and nothing they will not tell you.

“Do you mix your own cones?”

A good answer: Yes, fresh, with a date.

“Can I have a patch test before the wedding mehndi?”

A good answer: Yes, ahead of the day.

“How long will bridal mehndi take?”

A good answer: An honest number of hours.

“Is a trial included?”

A good answer: Yes or no, with a price.

“How do I get a dark stain?”

A good answer: How long to keep the paste on and aftercare for the mehndi.

“What is your charge for guests at a mehndi night?”

A good answer: Per hour or per guest, in writing.

Getting the quote right

  • Bridal or guest mehndi, coverage and hours
  • Travel and extra hours
  • Trial, if booked
  • Deposit and cancellation terms
  • Who actually attends: the henna and mehndi artist whose bridal work you saw, or helpers for the guests, and whether those helpers are employed or subcontracted

Walk away if

  • Paste called "black henna", or an artist who will not name the ingredients

Leave the reviewReviews of henna and mehndi artists on Locufy come from real bookings only. If the mehndi is not right, use the make-it-right step first so the henna and mehndi artist can put it right before the review goes up.

STEP 1Tell the henna and mehndi artist, in writingSend a message setting out what went wrong with the mehndi and what you want. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, work done without reasonable care and skill can be redone free or the price reduced.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyGive the mehndi under four stars and we ask whether to send it to the henna and mehndi artist first; we follow it through with them, and then you review.
STEP 3No regulator — Trading StandardsNo body licenses a henna and mehndi artist, so a mehndi dispute you cannot settle goes to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060) or Consumerline in Northern Ireland (0300 123 6262).
STEP 4Small claims, if it comes to moneyIf the henna and mehndi artist will not refund or redo the mehndi, you can claim without a solicitor: up to £10,000 on the small claims track in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under simple procedure in Scotland, and up to £5,000 in the small claims court in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a henna and mehndi artist: questions people ask

Not by law, in any UK nation. A good henna and mehndi artist can still show you training and an insurance schedule; ask for both.

Write to the henna and mehndi artist first. Your right under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is a repeat of the work, or a price reduction where repeating it is not possible.

£30–£150 per booking, typically around £100. Full bridal designs, the number of guests, hours and travel decide it. Check the henna & mehndi artist price guide for the full picture, then search your town above for henna and mehndi artists close by.

Ask exactly what is in any paste sold as "black henna" and choose plain natural henna from an artist who names every ingredient; if your skin reacts, wash it off and get medical advice.

Months ahead for wedding and Eid dates; get the booking in writing.

Tell the artist in writing. A design not done with reasonable care and skill is a reason for a reduction.
