BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No licence or statutory register applies to group fitness instructors in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and the title is not protected. Ask what qualification they hold for the class style and who awarded it.
Ask the group fitness instructor for the qualification, the awarding body and the date, then check with that body yourself.
Protected health titles
A group fitness instructor may not call themselves a physiotherapist, physical therapist, dietitian or sport and exercise psychologist unless they are on the HCPC Register — using one of those titles, or implying it, without registration is an offence under the Health Professions Order 2001.
If the group fitness instructor offers injury treatment or diet plans under one of those titles, search them on the HCPC Register. hcpc-uk.org →
Criminal record check for sessions with under-18s
Training children is regulated activity when a group fitness instructor does it on more than three days out of any thirty, or overnight; from 1 September 2026 being supervised no longer takes it outside. England and Wales: the enhanced DBS check with the children's barred list. Scotland: PVG scheme membership. Northern Ireland: an enhanced AccessNI check. No check is needed to train adults.
For a child's sessions, ask to see the certificate or PVG proof and read the issue date. gov.uk →
First aid
The 1981 first-aid regulations cover a self-employed group fitness instructor's own needs; no law makes them provide first aid for clients, but HSE strongly recommends planning for the public. Public liability insurance is the cover that pays if you are injured in a group fitness instructor's session; HSE says a business with employees will probably need employers' liability insurance too.
Ask whether the group fitness instructor holds a current first-aid certificate and what they do if someone collapses — including where the nearest defibrillator is. Ask the group fitness instructor for the insurer's name and the policy dates. hse.gov.uk →
VAT
Group fitness classes from a commercial studio or instructor are standard-rated at 20%; non-profit eligible bodies are the only ones the sports exemption covers. A studio with VAT taxable turnover over £90,000 must be VAT-registered and show VAT on its own line; a sole instructor under it adds none.
Ask whether the class pack price includes VAT, and for the studio's VAT number. gov.uk →
A good answer: A named qualification for the style — spin, circuits, Pilates — and who awarded it.
A good answer: A maximum the group fitness instructor can supervise safely.
A good answer: Modifications shown for each exercise.
A good answer: A clear list.
A good answer: Yes, with a plan for emergencies.
A good answer: Price per class, expiry and transfer rules.
A good answer: The cancellation window.
Getting the quote right
- Who actually attends to teach — the named instructor or a cover teacher, employed or subcontracted
- Drop-in price and pack prices
- Expiry of class packs
- Kit hire, towels or lockers
- The studio's VAT number, and VAT at 20% shown separately — only non-profit eligible bodies get the sports exemption
- Cancellation terms written down — a class or session booked for a fixed date is a leisure service, which the 14-day cancellation right does not cover (regulation 28), so the group fitness instructor's own terms decide
- Children's class supervision rules
Walk away if
- No health questions for new joiners
- Overcrowded class
- No first aid or emergency plan
- Packs with very short expiry and no refunds
- Uses a health title without HCPC registration
- Ignores injuries

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a group fitness instructor: questions people ask
No. No licence or statutory register applies in any UK nation.
Instructors teaching under-18s regularly should hold an enhanced DBS check in England and Wales, PVG membership in Scotland, or an enhanced AccessNI check in Northern Ireland.
Not by right — classes booked for a fixed date are leisure services outside the 14-day cancellation rule, so the studio's terms decide.
£8 to £20 a class, typically around £12. Class packs and memberships lower the price per class. The group fitness classes price guide breaks the range down, and the search above lists group fitness instructors near you with their prices.
At 20% from a VAT-registered commercial studio; non-profit eligible bodies may be exempt.
Report it, get it treated, and put a complaint in writing; a provider in business owes reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
