BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No licence or register covers fitted wardrobe installers anywhere in the UK, and fitting joinery needs no building regulations approval; lighting added inside is electrical work.
Before work starts, ask who will apply for any approval the fitted wardrobe installation needs. gov.uk →
Made-to-measure and cancellation
Regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 takes goods made to the consumer's specification, or clearly personalised, out of the 14-day cancellation right, so the fitted wardrobe installation order should be read carefully before you sign.
Ask for the written terms, deposit and delivery date before you sign. legislation.gov.uk →
TrustMark
TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality Scheme; it is voluntary, registration is trade by trade, and for the fitted wardrobe installation it is one of the few independent checks available.
Look the business up on TrustMark for the trade the fitted wardrobe installation falls under. trustmark.org.uk →
Insurance and trader status
Public liability insurance is the norm for the fitted wardrobe installation; ask who the insurer is and the cover limit. Your Consumer Rights Act 2015 protections for the fitted wardrobe installation apply because you are dealing with a trader, and if you agree the fitted wardrobe installation at home or online the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 usually give you 14 days to cancel — but you pay for any work you asked to start within those days, and goods made to your own specification are outside the right.
See the insurance certificate before you confirm the fitted wardrobe installation; the Locufy profile shows the trader and ID-checked badges.
VAT
HMRC puts made-to-measure wardrobes, supplied and fitted, at the standard rate of 20%; once a trader's taxable turnover passes £90,000 it must register, charge the 20% and list it apart from the price of the work.
Ask for the VAT number, and look for VAT as its own line on the wardrobe order and the balance invoice. gov.uk →
A good answer: The installer surveys; you are not left responsible for your own measurements.
A good answer: Board type and thickness, door finish, and hinges and runners named.
A good answer: Scribed panels and bespoke tops, not gaps hidden with trim.
A good answer: LED lighting by an electrician who certifies any new connection.
A good answer: Plain answer: made to measure is usually non-cancellable once ordered.
A good answer: Workmanship and the hardware, in writing.
Getting the quote right
- Width, height, door style and internal layout drawn
- Materials and hardware named
- Lighting and electrics if included
- Deposit, balance and delivery date
- Who actually attends — the fitters, and whoever makes the units, employed or subcontracted — and the business's VAT number, with VAT at 20% shown as its own line
Walk away if
- Pressure to sign on the first visit
- Large deposit with no written terms
- No drawing of the internal layout
- Gaps covered with trim instead of scribing
- Wires lighting with no certificate
What a fitted wardrobe installer costs: £400–£7,000 per project

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a fitted wardrobe installer: questions people ask
No licence or register applies anywhere in the UK; check insurance, references and the written order.
Wardrobes made to your specification are usually outside the 14-day right under regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
£400–£7,000 a project, typically around £2,600. Sliding-door kits cost least; made-to-measure and bespoke joinery cost more. There is a line-by-line breakdown in the Fitted Wardrobe Installer price guide, and the postcode box above brings up fitted wardrobe installers in your area.
A new connection to the wiring is electrical work that should be tested and certified.
If the installer measured, it is their job to put right under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Weeks to make, a day or two to fit; get the dates in writing.
