BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register applies to curtain and blind fitters in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so anyone may offer blind fitting. The law steps in only where blind fitting turns into gas work, notifiable electrical work or building work.

Ask for a business name, the insurer and a written description of the blind fitting.

Public liability insurance

No law requires a fitter to be insured, but a drill through a pipe or cable, or a heavy item coming off a wall, is exactly what public liability covers. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to blind fitting done with reasonable care and skill; insurance is what pays if it was not.

Ask the fitter for the insurer's name and the cover level before the blind fitting starts.

Ladders and work at height

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (and Northern Ireland's own of the same year) require work at height to be planned and done with suitable equipment; HSE's ladder guidance is a 1-in-4 angle and three points of contact. Stairwells and high ceilings make the blind fitting a work-at-height job.

For high or stairwell work, ask what access equipment the blind fitting will use. hse.gov.uk →

Your rights if a blind comes down

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a fitter must fix blinds and poles with reasonable care and skill; brackets that pull out of the lintel are theirs to put right.

Keep the invoice listing each window and blind fitted.

VAT

Fitting curtains or blinds is standard-rated at 20% when the fitter is registered, whether you supply them or the fitter does. A trader whose taxable turnover passes £90,000 must register, charge it and show it as a separate line; one below that threshold adds none.

Ask the blind fitter whether the per-window price includes VAT, and for the VAT number. gov.uk →

“How do you fix a blind or pole into a concrete lintel?”

A good answer: The right drill and plugs, and packers if needed.

“Will you fit the cord safety devices on each blind?”

A good answer: Yes, every corded blind.

“Should the blind go inside or outside the recess here?”

A good answer: Advice based on the window depth.

“Can you fit a curtain bay pole or curved track?”

A good answer: Yes, measured on site.

“What is the price per window for blind fitting?”

A good answer: A price per window, less for several.

“Are you insured if a frame or wall is damaged?”

A good answer: Public liability, insurer named.

Review it honestlyYour review of the blind fitting is tied to a real booking. Under four stars, you can send the problem with the blind fitting to the blind fitter first and we follow it up; then the review goes live.

STEP 1Go back to the blind fitterContact the blind fitter first, in writing, and keep a copy. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the blind fitting must be done with reasonable care and skill; you can ask for the faulty part to be done again free of charge, and if that fails, for some or all of the money back.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right stepBelow four stars, Locufy offers to pass the problem with the blind fitting to the blind fitter before your review is published, and follows it up with both of you.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplinesA blind fitter who will not engage can be reported through the consumer helplines, which pass cases to Trading Standards — Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060), Consumerline (0300 123 6262) in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claims, if money is owedIf money is still in dispute over the blind fitting, the small claims routes need no solicitor: up to £10,000 in England and Wales on the small claims track, £5,000 in Scotland under simple procedure, and £5,000 in Northern Ireland's small claims court.

Hiring a blind fitter: questions people ask

No. No register applies in any UK nation.

Ask for them on every corded blind, especially in children's rooms, and check they are fitted before the fitter leaves.

Ask about public liability insurance.

£30–£120 per window, about £70 on average. For what moves the figure, see the curtain and blind fitting price guide, and search your town above to find fitters nearby.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you can ask for it to be refitted at the fitter's cost.

Twenty to sixty minutes per window.
