BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

PSV operator licence

Operating a vehicle that can carry nine or more passengers for hire or reward needs a PSV operator licence from the traffic commissioner in Great Britain. Most full-time operators hold a standard licence; a restricted licence covers only one or two small vehicles.

Ask for the operator licence number before you book. gov.uk →

Bus operator licence (Northern Ireland)

In Northern Ireland the Driver and Vehicle Agency licenses bus and coach operators, can refuse or withdraw a licence, and publishes a list of licensed operators.

Check the operator on nidirect's list of licensed bus operators. nidirect.gov.uk →

The driver's licence category

A coach or minibus driven for payment needs a driver with a passenger-carrying (PCV) entitlement as well as the operator's PSV licence.

Ask the operator to confirm the driver's licence category. gov.uk →

VAT

Coach hire with a driver, in a coach with 10 or more seats, is zero-rated (0%). Transport sold together with admission to an attraction run by the same business is standard-rated instead. Coach operators over the £90,000 registration threshold must register for VAT and show it separately from the price.

Ask the coach operator to confirm the hire is with a driver and the coach has 10 or more seats. gov.uk →

“What is your PSV operator licence number?”

A good answer: A number they give at once.

“Is the coach the size and standard I booked?”

A good answer: Named size, seat belts, luggage space, accessibility.

“Will one driver be enough for this day?”

A good answer: An honest answer about drivers' hours; a second driver if needed.

“What does the coach hire price include?”

A good answer: Fuel, mileage, waiting time, parking.

“Are tolls, parking and driver accommodation extra?”

A good answer: Listed, not a surprise.

“What happens if the coach breaks down?”

A good answer: A replacement plan.

“What is the coach hire cancellation policy?”

A good answer: In writing.
