How to hire a car diagnostics technician in the UK
The checks, the questions and the paperwork.

A fault code is the start of a diagnosis, not the end. Here is what a proper check includes and what the findings should say.

THE 60-SECOND VERSION

Hiring a car diagnostics technician in five steps

  1. Note the warning light and symptomsWhich light, steady or flashing, when it came on, and what the car is doing.
  2. Agree the scope of the checkA code read, or fault-finding with live data and tests, and the price for each.
  3. Ask for the findings in writingThe codes, what they mean, what was tested and the likely fix.
  4. Check for a recallA safety recall may be fixed by the maker at no cost.
  5. Decide on the repair separatelyGet the repair quoted on its own; you are free to take the findings elsewhere.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No UK nation — England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland — licenses or registers car diagnostics technicians. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires the diagnosis, like any service, to be done with reasonable care and skill — Citizens Advice notes that a fault not correctly found can be one the garage should put right.

Safety recall check

When a maker recalls a car for a serious safety defect, the maker fixes it, and you will not usually pay. gov.uk lets you check a car's registration for open recalls, which can explain a fault before you pay for a repair; it also shows other faults registered with DVSA.

Run the registration through the gov.uk recall checker before booking a repair. gov.uk →

The Motor Ombudsman accreditation

Membership of The Motor Ombudsman's codes is voluntary, so plenty of capable car diagnostics technicians are not in it. Where the business is accredited, the Ombudsman can rule on a dispute about the car diagnostics technician once the business has had eight weeks to answer, and a final decision you accept binds it.

Look the business up on The Motor Ombudsman's Garage Finder before you book. businesses.themotorombudsman.org →

Trader status and a written quote

Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply when you deal with a trader. For a car diagnostics technician, settle the price up front: where none was agreed you need pay only a reasonable sum, and Citizens Advice says a garage may keep the vehicle over a disputed bill but not sell it.

Check the trader badge on the Locufy profile and keep the quote message. citizensadvice.org.uk →

VAT

Fault diagnosis is standard-rated at 20%, like the repair that follows it. Car diagnostics technicians whose taxable turnover passes £90,000 must register, charge VAT and show it as its own line on the quote and invoice.

Ask the garage for its VAT number and whether the diagnostic fee includes the 20%. gov.uk →

“Is this a code read or a full car diagnostic?”

A good answer: A clear answer and price. Reading codes takes minutes; finding the cause can take longer.

“Will I get the codes and findings in writing?”

A good answer: Yes — the codes, live data checked, tests done and the conclusion.

“Does the diagnostic fee come off the repair?”

A good answer: Some garages deduct it if they do the repair; ask.

“Is your diagnostic equipment right for my make?”

A good answer: Dealer-level software or a good independent tool for your make, especially for electrical faults.

“What will you do if the fault is intermittent?”

A good answer: An honest plan: data logging, a road test, or a return visit — and what it costs.

“Have you checked for recalls or known faults?”

A good answer: A good technician checks.

“Will you clear the codes only after fixing the cause?”

A good answer: Yes. Clearing a warning light without a fix hides the problem.

Getting the quote right

  • The diagnostic check described: code read, or fault-finding with time limit
  • The price, and whether it is deducted from a repair
  • Written findings, with the codes
  • The garage's VAT number, with VAT under the diagnostic fee
  • The repair quoted separately, if one is needed
  • Who actually attends to the diagnosis — the technician, employed or subcontracted

Walk away if

  • Codes cleared with no fix and no explanation
  • A parts list with no findings to back it up
  • Refusal to give the codes in writing
  • "It needs a new ECU" without tests

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the findingsCodes and conclusions, so another garage can pick up where this one stopped.
Watch for the lightIf it returns after a repair, go back with the findings and the invoice.
Compare the repair quoteFindings in hand, you can get a second quote before committing.
Review and make-it-rightLocufy's reviews are tied to real bookings. Rate it under four stars and the garage is invited to fix the problem before your review goes up.

STEP 1Tell the garage, in writingExplain what was diagnosed, what was charged and what turned out to be wrong. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you can require the service to be redone or a price reduction if it lacked reasonable care and skill.
STEP 2The Locufy make-it-right stepBelow four stars, you decide whether the complaint about the car diagnostics technician goes to the garage first. We follow it through, and then you review.
STEP 3The Motor Ombudsman or Trading StandardsIf the garage is accredited to The Motor Ombudsman, it can decide the dispute once the business has had eight weeks to reply. If not, take the car diagnostics technician complaint to the consumer helpline, which can pass it to Trading Standards: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claimsIf the car diagnostics technician still is not settled, the limits are £10,000 in England and Wales (small claims track), £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland (small claims court). Keep every message and invoice as evidence.

Hiring a car diagnostics technician: questions people ask

No. No UK nation licenses mechanics or diagnostics technicians. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires the check to be done with reasonable care and skill.

No certificate — ask for written findings with the codes, the tests done and the likely fix.

It will come back if the cause is still there, and a flashing engine light can mean damage is happening. Find the cause first.

Most people pay between £53 and £120 per check; £65 is the typical figure. The car diagnostics price guide shows what changes it, and a search above lists car diagnostics technicians nearby.

Possibly. gov.uk lets you check a registration for unfixed safety recalls, which the maker usually repairs at no cost.

Tell the garage in writing. If the fault was not correctly found, you can ask for the work to be put right or a price reduction under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
