THE 60-SECOND VERSION
Hiring a ballroom dance teacher in five steps
- Say what the dancing is forA wedding first dance, social dancing, medal tests or fitness — and how many weeks you have. A ballroom dance teacher plans each differently.
- Ask what they have taughtWho, at what level, and for how long. A ballroom dance teacher with recent students like you can say so in a sentence.
- Ask for a referenceOne or two people who learned with a ballroom dance teacher recently and will answer a message.
- Book a single class firstJudge a ballroom dance teacher on one ballroom lesson before paying for a set of private lessons or a six-week course.
- Get the terms in a messageBefore you pay for a set of private lessons or a six-week course: the number of private lessons, floor hire, and what happens if the wedding date moves. A message on Locufy is enough.

No register applies
None of the four UK nations licenses or registers ballroom dance teachers; anyone may run ballroom classes at a studio or a village hall. Their own work and how long they have taught are the evidence; there is nothing official to search.
Ask how long they have taught ballroom, what training they had, and for someone who can vouch for them.
Experience and insurance
No qualification is required to teach ballroom, and no register lists who does. A dance teaching qualification and membership of a dance teaching society are common; competitive dancing shows skill, teaching record shows teaching. HSE says a business with employees will probably need employers' liability insurance; ask a ballroom dance teacher working alone whether they hold public liability insurance.
Ask the ballroom dance teacher for their training, examples of their own work, and the name of their insurer. hse.gov.uk →
Written terms for a set of private lessons or a six-week course
Like any trader, a ballroom dance teacher owes you reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. For a leisure booking with a fixed date or period, regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 usually removes the 14-day cancellation right, so agree with a ballroom dance teacher in writing what happens if you have to drop out. The usual dispute is a first-dance routine still unfinished a week before the wedding.
Get the number of private lessons, floor hire, and what happens if the wedding date moves in writing — a Locufy message counts — before you pay for a set of private lessons or a six-week course. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
Ballroom and Latin lessons are standard-rated at 20%, including private lessons for a wedding first dance. A business over the £90,000 registration threshold must then charge VAT and show it as a separate line.
Ask the ballroom studio for its VAT number, and whether the lesson price already includes the 20%. gov.uk →
A good answer: An honest estimate from your starting point and the song — often a handful of private ballroom lessons.
A good answer: A simple routine built for your song and your level, with a video to practise from.
A good answer: Private for a wedding or fast progress; a group ballroom course for social dancing at lower cost.
A good answer: If so, which, and the test fees shown separately.
A good answer: A named studio or hall, and whether hire is in the price.
A good answer: Clear written rules: what notice you give, and that a ballroom lesson a ballroom dance teacher cancels is rearranged or refunded.
Getting the quote right
- Who actually attends to teach — the ballroom dance teacher named, or a partner from the studio, employed or subcontracted
- The price per class, and how long a ballroom lesson lasts
- Floor or studio hire, and whether it is in the ballroom lesson price
- What happens to a set of private lessons or a six-week course if you stop early, or the ballroom dance teacher does
- Travel, room or venue charges, if any
- The VAT number if the studio is registered, with VAT on the lessons and floor hire as separate lines
Walk away if
- The ballroom dance teacher cannot say in writing what the class includes until you arrive
- A first-dance routine too hard to learn in the weeks you have
- No written price for the full set of lessons before you start
- A ballroom dance teacher who will not offer a trial lesson
- A long ballroom course paid up front, with no written refund terms
What a ballroom dance teacher costs: £18–£40 per lesson
