BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register covers aquarium maintenance in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Fish are animals under welfare law, so the technician must care for them properly while working on the tank.

Ask about experience with your type of tank — freshwater, tropical or reef. legislation.gov.uk →

Insurance for water damage

No law requires an aquarium technician to be insured, but a leak or a dropped tank lid can do real damage. Ask about public liability insurance that covers your home.

Ask for the insurer and the cover.

Animal welfare law

An aquarium maintenance technician takes on a legal duty, not just a job. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (England and Wales) a person in charge of an animal on a temporary basis is responsible for meeting its needs — diet, environment, protection from pain and disease — with equivalent duties in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Ask how they would spot illness in your fish and what they would do. legislation.gov.uk →

VAT

Servicing an aquarium is standard-rated: 20% VAT applies to the visit, the water change and the filter media used. Over the £90,000 registration threshold a trader has to charge VAT and show it separately, next to its VAT number.

Ask for the VAT number, and whether the price per tank visit is quoted before or after the 20%. gov.uk →

“What does each aquarium maintenance visit include?”

A good answer: Testing, water change, glass, gravel, filter.

“Which water parameters will you test?”

A good answer: Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH — more for marine.

“How will you prepare the replacement water for the aquarium?”

A good answer: Treated and temperature-matched.

“Do you service marine and reef aquariums?”

A good answer: Specific experience.

“Will you keep a log of the tank's water tests?”

A good answer: Yes, shared with you.

“Is the aquarium technician insured against water damage?”

A good answer: Yes.

“What if fish are unwell?”

A good answer: Advice, and a referral to an aquatic vet if needed.

AFTER

When the job is done

Watch the fishNormal behaviour and feeding.
Keep the logWater test results.
Check for leaksAround the tank after a visit.
Close the loopReview once you have lived with the result for a few days; if it falls short, the make-it-right step lets the technician respond before it goes live.

STEP 1Tell the technician, in writingDescribe what went wrong with the aquarium and what you want. What the law does require is reasonable care and skill, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
STEP 2The Locufy make-it-right stepBelow four stars, you decide whether the complaint about the aquarium maintenance technician goes to the technician first. We follow it through, and then you review.
STEP 3Escalate itWith no register for an aquarium maintenance technician, escalation runs through the consumer helplines, which can pass cases to Trading Standards: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claimsIf the aquarium maintenance technician still is not settled, the limits are £10,000 in England and Wales (small claims track), £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland (small claims court). Keep every message and invoice as evidence.
