What moves the price

  • Amount of glass — an SUV or estate has more and larger rear windows to tint than a small hatchback
  • Curved glass — sharply curved rear screens take longer to shrink and fit the window tint film
  • Film quality — ceramic and carbon films cost more than dyed film but block more heat
  • Removing old tint — stripping faded or bubbled film adds time before new tint goes on
  • Front side windows — any tint here stays within the legal light limits, so a lighter window film is used
  • Mobile or workshop — a clean, dust-free workshop gives the best finish for window tinting

How to pay less

  • Tint the rear windows only, where any shade is legal, and leave the front glass clear
  • Choose a standard film unless you need the heat rejection of ceramic window tint
  • Have old tint removed and new window tint film fitted on the same visit rather than booking the removal separately

Before you book

  • Keep front window tint legal: a windscreen needs 75% light transmission, front side glass 70%
  • Tell your insurer about window tinting, as many count it as a modification
  • Ask the installer for the light transmission figure of any film used on the front windows
  • Check the window tint warranty covers bubbling, peeling and colour change

They can. Most insurers want to know about window tinting, and failing to declare it can cause trouble with a claim.

Windscreen replacement, paint protection film and wraps are separate services, though some installers offer them too.
