What moves the price

  • Type of bird — parrots need social time out of the cage, which takes longer than caring for finches
  • Number of birds — an aviary or a flock of hens takes more feeding and cleaning time
  • Cage or aviary cleaning — a full clean costs more than changing food and water
  • Visits per day — some birds need morning and evening care, doubling the visits
  • Medication and diets — fresh food preparation and medicines add to the bird care time
  • Region — bird sitters in London and the South East charge more

Bird Care cost: questions people ask

£10–£20 per visit, about £17 typical. A daily feed for a budgie costs the least; parrots needing time out of the cage or a flock of hens costs the most.

Most cage birds need at least one daily visit. Parrots and hens often do better with morning and evening visits.

In England and Wales you must register poultry and other captive birds. Budgies, parrots and canaries kept entirely indoors are exempt.

Only if they are confident handling parrots and the room is safe. Many owners ask sitters to keep birds caged unless they know them well.

Avian vet trips, wing or nail clipping and boarding are separate services.
