BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

There is no licence for windscreen fitters, and no register, anywhere in the UK. The fitting must be done with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Ask about the glass type and recalibration before booking. citizensadvice.org.uk →

The driver's view at the MOT

DVSA's MOT inspection manual looks at damage, obstructions and excessive tinting of the windscreen as they affect the driver's view. A new screen should be clear, correctly fitted and free of distortion.

Look through the new screen from the driver's seat before you drive off. gov.uk →

The Motor Ombudsman accreditation

Accreditation to The Motor Ombudsman is a voluntary code, not a licence. Its value for a windscreen fitter is the dispute route: the Ombudsman steps in once the accredited business has had eight weeks to put things right, and a final decision you accept is binding on it.

Search the business name on The Motor Ombudsman's Garage Finder. businesses.themotorombudsman.org →

Price and extra work in writing

With no fixed price, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to pay only a reasonable amount for the windscreen fitter. Citizens Advice notes that a fitter can hold on to the vehicle during a dispute over the bill, but has no right to sell it.

Ask for the quote in writing and a phone call before anything is added. citizensadvice.org.uk →

VAT

A replacement windscreen and its fitting are standard-rated at 20%. Windscreen fitters with more than £90,000 of taxable turnover must register for VAT, charge it, and itemise it on every quote and invoice.

Ask the glass firm for its VAT number and whether the price includes the 20%. gov.uk →

“Is the replacement windscreen glass original or equivalent?”

A good answer: Either, with the features matched.

“Does my car need camera recalibration after the windscreen replacement?”

A good answer: An answer for your car, and whether it is included.

“How long before I can drive after the windscreen is fitted?”

A good answer: A safe drive-away time for the adhesive used.

“Will the rain sensor and mirror be transferred?”

A good answer: Yes, refitted and tested.

“Can the windscreen fitter come to me?”

A good answer: Often, unless recalibration needs a workshop.

“Will you deal with my insurer?”

A good answer: If covered, how and the excess.

“What guarantee covers leaks and fitting?”

A good answer: In writing.

AFTER

When the job is done

Wait before drivingFollow the drive-away time.
Check for leaks and wind noiseAfter the first wash or rain.
Keep the invoice and recalibration reportProof the cameras were set.
Write the reviewSomething wrong? Use make-it-right first and give the fitter a fair chance to sort it before you review.

STEP 1Tell the fitter, in writingDescribe the problem with the windscreen replacement and what you want. By law (Consumer Rights Act 2015) the job has to be done with reasonable care and skill.
STEP 2Let Locufy follow it upRate the windscreen fitter under four stars and Locufy asks if you want the fitter to have the chance to fix it before the review is published; we follow it through.
STEP 3Ombudsman or consumer helplineAsk whether the fitter belongs to The Motor Ombudsman; if it does, the Ombudsman can decide the windscreen fitter dispute after eight weeks. Otherwise call the consumer helpline for your nation, which passes cases to Trading Standards: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Money still in disputeA claim over a windscreen fitter can go to the small claims track in the county court up to £10,000 in England and Wales, to simple procedure in the sheriff court up to £5,000 in Scotland, or to the small claims court up to £5,000 in Northern Ireland — no solicitor needed.

Hiring a windscreen fitter: questions people ask

No. No UK nation licenses windscreen fitters. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still sets the standard: reasonable care and skill.

An invoice, and for cars with cameras a recalibration report. Keep both.

If your car has lane-keeping or emergency braking cameras on the screen, usually yes.

Most people pay between £150 and £700 per screen; £345 is the typical figure. The windscreen replacement price guide shows what changes it, and a search above lists windscreen fitters nearby.

Many policies with glass cover do, less an excess.

Tell the fitter in writing. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 faulty work must be put right.
