THE 60-SECOND VERSION

Hiring a Mandarin tutor in five steps

  1. Say what the Mandarin is forGCSE, a work posting, travel, an HSK level or reading and writing for a heritage speaker. A Mandarin tutor plans each differently.
  2. See the criminal record checkFor Mandarin lessons with a child, ask for an enhanced DBS check in England and Wales, PVG membership in Scotland or AccessNI in Northern Ireland. A Mandarin tutor applies and shows you.
  3. Ask about recent studentsHow many learners at your level a Mandarin tutor teaches this year, and what changed for them.
  4. Try one lesson before a blockA first Mandarin lesson should end with a clear idea of where you are and what comes next. If it does not, try another Mandarin tutor.
  5. Get the terms in a messageBefore you pay for a block of lessons: the balance of speaking and characters, the notice to stop, and books on top. A message on Locufy is enough.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register applies to Mandarin tutors in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and Mandarin can be taught by anyone who chooses to, online or at home, with characters practised on paper. Being a native speaker is not a teaching qualification; training and results are what you ask to see.

Ask how long they have taught Mandarin, what training they had, and for someone who can vouch for them.

Criminal record check for a young learner

In England and Wales, teaching or instructing a child on more than three days in any 30, or once overnight, is regulated activity — so a Mandarin tutor seeing your child for one or two hours a week should hold an enhanced DBS check with the children's barred list. The definition changed on 1 September 2026: a Mandarin tutor who is supervised is now inside regulated activity too. Scotland uses PVG scheme membership, and mygov.scot names tutors and instructors a parent engages for a child as a role to ask about; in Northern Ireland, a self-employed Mandarin tutor gets an enhanced AccessNI check with the children's barred list through an Umbrella Body.

You cannot apply on a Mandarin tutor's behalf. Ask to see their own certificate and read its issue date — it has no official expiry — or PVG proof in Scotland, or an AccessNI certificate shared from their nidirect account. gov.uk →

Teaching skill, not just fluency

Speaking Mandarin well is not the same as teaching it, and no UK register lists those who do. Look for a degree in the language, QTS if they teach school pupils, or a recognised language-teaching certificate — and students at your level now.

Ask a Mandarin tutor for their teaching certificate and how many learners at your level they have this term.

The terms for a block of lessons

Working as a trader, a Mandarin tutor must teach with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Booked online or agreed at your home, Mandarin lessons carry 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; if you asked for teaching to start inside those 14 days, you pay for what was given. The usual dispute is a course that never moved past pinyin.

Ask for the balance of speaking and characters, the notice to stop, and books on top in writing, and keep the message, before a block of lessons changes hands. legislation.gov.uk →

VAT

Mandarin lessons are exempt from VAT when a Mandarin tutor teaches personally as a sole trader or partner, Mandarin being ordinarily taught in UK schools and universities; a language school company or its employees are standard-rated. A tutor working alone under the £90,000 registration threshold does not charge VAT and has no VAT number to give.

Ask whether you pay the Mandarin tutor directly or a language school; an individual under £90,000 adds no VAT. gov.uk →

“Before the first Mandarin lesson, can I see your criminal record certificate and its date?”

A good answer: "Yes — here it is." A Mandarin tutor teaching your child for one or two hours a week should hold the enhanced check for your nation and show it without fuss.

“Have you taught Mandarin for my exam or goal recently?”

A good answer: A specific answer — GCSE or A level and the board, National 5 or Higher in Scotland, or the work or travel situation you need. A Mandarin tutor who prepares exam pupils knows the speaking and writing tasks.

“How do you teach tones?”

A good answer: Early and often, with listening and repetition; a Mandarin tutor should correct tones from the first lesson.

“Will we learn characters, pinyin or both?”

A good answer: Pinyin first for pronunciation, with characters introduced at the learner's pace — GCSE needs both.

“Simplified or traditional characters?”

A good answer: Simplified for most exams; an honest answer if the learner needs the other.

“Can you help a heritage learner read and write?”

A good answer: Yes, building characters on top of the spoken Mandarin the learner already has.

“If my child is ill, or you are, what happens to that Mandarin lesson?”

A good answer: Clear written rules: what notice you give, and that a Mandarin lesson a Mandarin tutor cancels is rearranged or refunded.

Booking by the hour

  • The rate per hour, and whether evening or weekend lessons cost more
  • The minimum booking — one hour is usual — and whether an early finish is charged in full
  • What each side brings: the course book, character practice paper, the tutor's tone drills and pinyin charts
  • The aim agreed before the first hour: HSK, a GCSE, business trips or conversation
  • ID checked and the rating, and vetting for a learner under 18

Walk away if

When the job is done

File what you were givenHold on to the character lists and the invoices; together with the agreed terms they settle most disagreements.
Test the progressEvery half term, have a short conversation in Mandarin on a topic from your lessons, or sit a timed past-paper task — fluency and accuracy should both show movement.
The guarantee, honestlyNobody honest promises a set HSK level by a date. Hold the Mandarin tutor to the Mandarin lessons agreed, taught with care.
Leave the reviewReviews on Locufy come only from booked Mandarin lessons. A problem goes to the Mandarin tutor first through the make-it-right step.

STEP 1Put it to the Mandarin tutor in writingName the Mandarin lessons that fell short and the remedy you want; with Mandarin tutors, it is often a course that never moved past pinyin. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 standard is reasonable care and skill; where a Mandarin tutor fell short of it, you can require a repeat or a reduction.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyLeave under four stars and you are asked whether to send it to the Mandarin tutor first; we follow it through, then the review is published.
STEP 3Get help from Trading StandardsNo regulator covers Mandarin tutors, so a consumer complaint goes to Trading Standards through your nation's helpline: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, or Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Money still in disputeSmall claims handle a dispute with a Mandarin tutor without a solicitor: up to £10,000 in England and Wales (small claims track), £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland. Bring the character lists and the invoices to the claim.

Hiring a Mandarin tutor: questions people ask

The law does not require it of every Mandarin tutor. What it does say is that a barred person must not work with children in regulated activity, which across England and Wales includes teaching a child on more than three days in 30 — so ask to see an enhanced DBS check, PVG membership in Scotland or an AccessNI check in Northern Ireland.

None is required by law in any part of the UK; anyone can teach Mandarin. A language degree or teaching certificate shows training; ask for students they teach Mandarin to now.

£30–£53 an hour, with £40 typical; exam and business Mandarin cost most. See the Mandarin lessons price guide for the full range; type your town above for real Mandarin tutors nearby.

Normally no. Mandarin is taught in UK schools and universities, so a Mandarin tutor working as a sole trader or partner is exempt; a language school company or its employed teachers are standard-rated and add VAT once over £90,000.

Fewer qualified Mandarin tutors, and characters add teaching time, so rates sit near the top for languages.

Longer than European languages for English speakers; steady weekly lessons over years for real fluency.
