No register applies
No licence or register applies to garage door engineers in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so anyone may offer garage door repair. The law steps in only where garage door repair turns into gas work, notifiable electrical work or building work.
Ask for a business name, the insurer and a written description of the garage door repair.
Where electrical work starts
If the garage door repair turns into wiring — a new socket, a spur, a light moved — that is electrical work, which in England and Wales must meet the Building Regulations. A new consumer unit or work near a bath or shower is notifiable, and in Wales so is work in kitchens and outdoors: a scheme electrician or building control only.
Keep any new wiring for the garage door repair with an electrician on the Registered Competent Person Electrical register. electricalcompetentperson.co.uk →
Asbestos in older buildings
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (Northern Ireland has its own 2012 Regulations) some asbestos work may only be done by an HSE-licensed contractor, and HSE classes broken-up asbestos cement sheeting as notifiable work. Old garage and shed roofs are where it turns up in a garage door repair.
Before the garage door repair breaks up any old cement sheet or board, ask how it will be checked for asbestos. hse.gov.uk →
Public liability insurance
No law requires an engineer to be insured, but a drill through a pipe or cable, or a heavy item coming off a wall, is exactly what public liability covers. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to garage door repair done with reasonable care and skill; insurance is what pays if it was not.
Ask the engineer for the insurer's name and the cover level before the garage door repair starts.
VAT
Garage door repair is standard-rated at 20%, on springs, cables, motors and the labour to fit them. Once a business's taxable turnover goes over £90,000 it must be registered, and the VAT then goes on the quote as its own line.
Ask the garage door firm for its VAT number and whether the repair price is plus VAT. gov.uk →
A good answer: Spring, cable, roller, track or motor — diagnosed.
A good answer: Part and labour, before work.
A good answer: Yes, or an honest second-visit plan.
A good answer: Yes, so it lifts evenly.
A good answer: Tested and reset.
A good answer: Public liability, insurer named.
Getting the quote right
- Failed part named and priced
- Labour
- Second visit if parts must be ordered
- Electrical work excluded or by a registered electrician
- Who actually attends — the firm's engineer or a subcontractor, and who does any electrical work
- The VAT number, with VAT at 20% listed separately
Walk away if
- Tells you to adjust springs yourself
- Pushes a new door without diagnosing
- No total price
- Breaks up an old cement roof sheet without checking
