BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

The Solicitors Register

Solicitors and firms in England and Wales are regulated by the SRA, and its register shows whether the person and the firm are authorised. Firms offering unfair or wrongful dismissal claims to the public must publish price and service information.

Search the employment law solicitor and the firm on the SRA register. sra.org.uk →

Acas before a tribunal claim

gov.uk says you must tell Acas before making an employment tribunal claim; the time limit is put on hold while Acas helps resolve the dispute. Any solicitor on the SRA register who takes your case should start with this step.

Ask the solicitor to confirm Acas early conciliation has started, or start it yourself. gov.uk →

Tribunal time limits

For problems on or after 1 October 2026 you usually have six months to claim; for problems before that date, three months. The period starts from a set event, such as the end of your job. Missing it can end a claim, whichever solicitor on the register you instruct.

Write down the key date and give it to the employment law solicitor at the first contact. gov.uk →

Law Society of Scotland or Northern Ireland

Outside England and Wales, solicitors are regulated by the Law Society of Scotland or the Law Society of Northern Ireland; Northern Ireland also has its own way to make an employment claim.

VAT

Legal advice is standard-rated, so an employment law solicitor's firm adds 20% to its fees for advice, negotiation and tribunal stages. Registration becomes compulsory once an employment law solicitor's firm has VAT-taxable turnover over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months; from then VAT must be charged and shown as a separate line on the invoice.

Ask the firm for the VAT number on the client care letter and for VAT on each stage invoice as a separate line. gov.uk →
