BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No law licenses cloud consultants in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland; platform certifications are voluntary. References, a clear scope and control of your own accounts are what protect you.
Ask for a similar migration or review and a client you can speak to.
Processor contract for personal data (UK GDPR)
If the consultant or the cloud provider processes personal data on your behalf, the ICO's guidance sets out the terms a written controller-processor contract must include, from security to what happens at the end.
Check the cloud provider's data terms and agree written terms with the cloud consultant before data moves. ico.org.uk →
Cyber Essentials scheme
Cyber Essentials, the government-backed scheme from the National Cyber Security Centre, covers secure configuration and user access control, among five controls, and applies to cloud services you run.
If you hold or want Cyber Essentials, ask how the cloud design keeps you within it. ncsc.gov.uk →
Off-payroll working (IR35)
A cloud consultant working through their own limited company may come under HMRC's off-payroll rules; usually the client decides status, except small private-sector clients.
Ask how the consultant is engaged and record the decision. gov.uk →
VAT
Cloud consultancy is standard-rated: a registered cloud consultant charges 20% on the consultancy days, while the provider's monthly bill comes to you separately. Registration becomes compulsory once a cloud consultant has VAT-taxable turnover over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months; from then VAT must be charged and shown as a separate line on the invoice.
Ask the cloud consultant for the VAT number with the statement of work and for VAT on the days alone, not mixed into the provider charges. gov.uk →

A good answer: Documentation and a knowledge-transfer session before the last day.
Getting the quote right
- Day rate and number of days
- Who actually attends the migration windows: the cloud consultant named, an employed engineer, or a subcontracted specialist
- Statement of work with deliverables and acceptance
- Cloud provider bills and licences paid by you, separately
- Out-of-hours migration windows and their rates
- Documentation, handover and admin access returned
- Engagement basis
- The VAT number, with VAT at 20% on the consultancy days and out-of-hours windows
Walk away if
- Opens cloud accounts in their own name
- Only they hold the root or top-level admin login
- No rollback plan for a migration
- Personal data moved with no written terms
- No cost controls
- No documentation at the end

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a cloud consultant: questions people ask
No. No licence, register or qualification applies in any UK nation.
Your business. Open and pay for them yourself and give the consultant named access.
Personal data must stay secure, and processing on your behalf needs written terms that meet UK GDPR.
The range is £408–£684 per day, and £523 is a typical figure. Architecture work, platform certifications, complex migrations and regulated data move the day rate. The cloud consultant price guide covers what changes it; enter your town above to compare local cloud consultants.
They can, if the consultant uses their own company; HMRC explains who decides status.
Reviews take a few days; migrations and architecture projects can run for weeks or months.
