BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or statutory register applies to baby sleep consultants in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The title is not protected, and training is voluntary.

Ask the baby sleep consultant about training, phone two references and see photo ID that matches the booking.

Health titles are protected

Nurses and midwives must be on the NMC register to practise. A baby sleep consultant who says they are a nurse or midwife should give you their PIN.

Search the NMC register with the PIN. nmc.org.uk →

Home visits and vetting

A consultant working only by phone or video needs no criminal record check. One who comes into your home or does overnight support is caring for your baby; ask for the check for your nation — DBS, PVG or AccessNI.

Ask the baby sleep consultant to show the certificate if they will visit. gov.uk →

Trader status and cancellation

A baby sleep consultant in business is a trader under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A service agreed online, by phone or in your home can usually be cancelled within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; if you asked for it to start sooner, you pay for what was done.

Keep the booking confirmation and the written terms.

VAT

Sleep consultancy is standard-rated at 20% when the consultant is VAT-registered. A consultant with VAT taxable turnover over £90,000 must charge VAT and show it separately; one below the threshold charges none.

Ask whether the package price includes VAT, and for the VAT number if it is added. gov.uk →

“When would you send me to the GP or health visitor?”

A good answer: Signs of illness, feeding or weight problems.

“What does the baby sleep package include?”

A good answer: Assessment, plan, number of calls or messages, and for how long.

“Do you visit, and if so which check do you hold?”

A good answer: DBS, PVG or AccessNI.

“What if the plan does not work?”

Rate the visitSay what the baby sleep consultant did well and what they missed. Unhappy? The make-it-right step comes before the review is published.

STEP 1Start with a message to the baby sleep consultantSet out the facts and the outcome you want, and keep a copy. Reasonable care and skill is implied into every service contract by section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015; if the support fell short, the baby sleep consultant must redo it or reduce the bill under section 54.
STEP 2Ask Locufy to help put it rightWhen a booked baby sleep consultant gets under four stars, you choose whether they see the problem first, and we follow it up with them. Then you review.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplineNo regulator covers a baby sleep consultant, so a baby sleep consultant who will not engage can be referred to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales (0808 223 1144 in Welsh), Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, or Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Take it to small claimsA claim against a baby sleep consultant for money back can go to court without a solicitor — £10,000 is the limit in England and Wales, £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland.
