BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
Registered Gas Installer (RGI) Scheme
Restricted to Registered Gas Installer (RGI): installing, servicing or repairing a gas boiler; any work on gas pipework or a gas appliance; commissioning a gas appliance.
Search the Registered Gas Installer scheme for the name or the registration number before you agree a price. rgii.ie →
Declaration of Conformance Certificate
Issued by the Registered Gas Installer on completion of the gas works. It matters because it is the record that the work conforms to the standards, and it is asked for on sale, remortgage and insurance.
Agree before the work starts that you will be handed declaration of conformance certificate, and keep it with the house papers.
Insurance
Expect public liability; ask who the insurer is. From a company, ask for the insurer, the limit and the VAT number, and ask who actually attends: the team that turns up may be employed, subcontracted or both, and only one of those is supervised by the firm you are paying.
Ask to see the current certificate of insurance — the insurer's name, the limit and the date it runs to.
Trader or private seller
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 a trader must tell you they are a trader, and your consumer rights — work carried out with reasonable skill and care, and a cooling-off period on a contract agreed in your home or online — apply to traders and not to private sellers. On Locufy the trader status is shown on the profile.
Look for the trader badge on the Locufy profile, and ask anyone else for it in writing before you agree a price.
VAT
VAT at 13.5%, the reduced rate Revenue publishes for this service. Ask whether the price you were given includes it. A trader under the €42,500 registration threshold does not charge it; one over it must, and must show it separately.
Ask whether the figure you were given includes it, and for the VAT number if they are registered — Revenue publishes the rate for this service. revenue.ie →

Getting the quote right
- Complexity of the installation — it has to be seen before a firm price can be given.
- Type of stove selected — each level up adds both material and labour.
- What does this service include? — it decides whether the work can be done in one go.
- Hearth Construction — it is the first thing a provider looks at on arrival.
- In writing before anyone starts — a message on Locufy counts
- What is NOT included, named
- Who actually attends, and whether they are employed or subcontracted
- The VAT number, and whether it checks out on the Revenue register
Walk away if
- They are not on the Registered Gas Installer scheme, or the number does not resolve to the name on the quote
- No Declaration of Conformance Certificate is offered, or you are told you do not need one for work of this kind
- They will not talk about it: complexity of the installation — it has to be seen before a firm price can be given
- They will not talk about it: type of stove selected — each level up adds both material and labour
- They will not talk about it: what does this service include? — it decides whether the work can be done in one go
- A price for the stove installer before anyone has asked the size, the access or the condition of what they are working on

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a stove installer: questions people ask
Many homeowners find wood burning stoves cost-effective in the long run due to their efficiency and the renewable nature of wood as a fuel. Consider the size and efficiency rating of the stove.
DIY installations are not recommended due to safety risks and regulatory compliance requirements. The scope of the installation may vary based on the type of stove, the existing chimney structure, and any additional features such as hearths or flue liners.
Search the name or the registration number. If the number does not resolve to the name on the quote, stop there.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 the work must be carried out with reasonable skill and care, and put right if it is not. Say what is wrong in writing first.
Two or three, each for the same written scope. Quotes for different scopes are not comparable, which is how the cheapest one wins and then grows.
The work, what is not included, the materials where they matter, the dates, and the total with VAT shown as its own line. A figure with none of that around it is a price and not a quote, and it is the reason two stove installer quotes for what sounds like the same job are not comparable.
