BEFORE YOU BOOK

No statutory register applies
No register or licence applies to fire risk assessors or health and safety consultants in Ireland. Anyone may use either title. What the law does say is that the duty runs the other way: under section 18 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 an employer must appoint one or more competent persons to handle protection and prevention, and the Act defines a competent person by training, experience and knowledge appropriate to the work. If you are engaging an assessor for a workplace, satisfying yourself of their competence is your obligation and not a courtesy — so ask, and write the answers down.
Look for the trader badge and the ID-checked badge on the Locufy profile — both are checked by us, not claimed by the provider.
What to check instead
The qualification and who awarded it, by name, and whether it covers the kind of building or work you are asking about; Membership of a professional body, and whether the body holds a searchable register and a complaints procedure; Experience of your building type specifically — a fire risk assessment for a two-storey office is not the one for a four-storey apartment block; Professional indemnity insurance, the insurer and the limit, because the deliverable is an opinion you will rely on; What you receive: a written report, who signs it, what standard it is written to, and whether a review visit is included; Whether they also sell the remedial work, which is a conflict worth knowing about before the report arrives.
Ask for each of these before you agree a price, and get the answers in the same message as the quote.
Insurance
Expect professional indemnity insurance — the deliverable is an opinion you act on, so ask for the insurer and the limit. From a company, ask for the insurer, the limit and the VAT number, and ask who actually attends: the team that turns up may be employed, subcontracted or both, and only one of those is supervised by the firm you are paying.
Ask to see the current certificate of insurance — the insurer's name, the limit and the date it runs to.
Trader or private seller
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 a trader must tell you they are a trader, and your consumer rights — work carried out with reasonable skill and care, and a cooling-off period on a contract agreed in your home or online — apply to traders and not to private sellers. On Locufy the trader status is shown on the profile.
Look for the trader badge on the Locufy profile, and ask anyone else for it in writing before you agree a price.
VAT
VAT at 23%, the standard rate Revenue publishes for this service. Ask whether the price you were given includes it. A trader under the €42,500 registration threshold does not charge it; one over it must, and must show it separately.
Ask whether the figure you were given includes it, and for the VAT number if they are registered — Revenue publishes the rate for this service. revenue.ie →

When the job is done
Hiring a health & safety consultant: questions people ask
The cost can vary based on the consultant's experience, the complexity of the project, and the specific services required. Additionally, the size of your business and the industry you operate in can also impact pricing.
The duration of a consultation can vary widely depending on the scope of work. A simple risk assessment may take a few hours, while comprehensive training programs or policy development could require several days.
For most general health and safety needs, a qualified consultant is sufficient. However, for specialised areas such as electrical, gas, or structural safety, it's advisable to hire a consultant with specific qualifications and experience in those fields.
Many health and safety consultants offer emergency services, but availability can vary by provider. It's best to inquire directly with the consultant about their ability to accommodate urgent requests.
While health and safety consultants cover a broad range of services, tasks such as physical repairs, construction work, or legal representation are generally outside their scope. It's important to clarify the specific services offered before hiring.
