BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
Registered Gas Installer (RGI) Scheme
Restricted to Registered Gas Installer (RGI): installing, servicing or repairing a gas boiler; any work on gas pipework or a gas appliance; commissioning a gas appliance.
Search the Registered Gas Installer scheme for the name or the registration number before you agree a price. rgii.ie →
Declaration of Conformance Certificate
Issued by the Registered Gas Installer on completion of the gas works. It matters because it is the record that the work conforms to the standards, and it is asked for on sale, remortgage and insurance.
Agree before the work starts that you will be handed declaration of conformance certificate, and keep it with the house papers.
Insurance
Expect public liability; ask who the insurer is. From a company, ask for the insurer, the limit and the VAT number, and ask who actually attends: the team that turns up may be employed, subcontracted or both, and only one of those is supervised by the firm you are paying.
Ask to see the current certificate of insurance — the insurer's name, the limit and the date it runs to.
Trader or private seller
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 a trader must tell you they are a trader, and your consumer rights — work carried out with reasonable skill and care, and a cooling-off period on a contract agreed in your home or online — apply to traders and not to private sellers. On Locufy the trader status is shown on the profile.
Look for the trader badge on the Locufy profile, and ask anyone else for it in writing before you agree a price.
VAT
VAT at 13.5%, the reduced rate Revenue publishes for this service. Ask whether the price you were given includes it. A trader under the €42,500 registration threshold does not charge it; one over it must, and must show it separately.
Ask whether the figure you were given includes it, and for the VAT number if they are registered — Revenue publishes the rate for this service. revenue.ie →

Getting the quote right
- Number of gas appliances being inspected — a small number is quick; a large one becomes a day's work.
- Complexity of the installation — the more pieces involved, the more there is to go wrong.
- Their condition — damage found on the day adds time that was not in the quote.
- Any necessary repairs — the state of the existing work sets how much prep is needed.
- In writing before anyone starts — a message on Locufy counts
- What is NOT included, named
- Who actually attends, and whether they are employed or subcontracted
- The VAT number, and whether it checks out on the Revenue register
Walk away if
- They are not on the Registered Gas Installer scheme, or the number does not resolve to the name on the quote
- No Declaration of Conformance Certificate is offered, or you are told you do not need one for work of this kind
- They will not talk about it: number of gas appliances being inspected — a small number is quick; a large one becomes a day's work
- They will not talk about it: complexity of the installation — the more pieces involved, the more there is to go wrong
- They will not talk about it: their condition — damage found on the day adds time that was not in the quote
- A price for the gas safety certificate before anyone has asked the size, the access or the condition of what they are working on

Yes, many service providers allow you to book multiple jobs, such as repairs or maintenance, alongside the Gas Safety Certificate inspection. This can often lead to cost savings and improved efficiency.
The inspection focuses solely on gas safety; therefore, electrical work, structural issues, or cosmetic repairs are typically out of scope. Any necessary repairs identified during the inspection will need to be addressed separately.
Search the name or the registration number. If the number does not resolve to the name on the quote, stop there.
