BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
National Waste Collection Permit
Every waste collector in Ireland must hold a valid collection permit from the NWCPO. The permit number reads NWCPO-YY-NNNNN-NN, must be displayed on the vehicle, and a copy must be carried in it. The permit names the waste types, vehicles and areas allowed — a permit for one thing is not a permit for another.
Search the National Waste Collection Permit Office register for the name or the registration number before you agree a price. facilityregister.nwcpo.ie →
Insurance
Expect public liability, and goods-in-transit where they carry your property. From a company, ask for the insurer, the limit and the VAT number, and ask who actually attends: the team that turns up may be employed, subcontracted or both, and only one of those is supervised by the firm you are paying.
Ask to see the current certificate of insurance — the insurer's name, the limit and the date it runs to.
Trader or private seller
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 a trader must tell you they are a trader, and your consumer rights — work carried out with reasonable skill and care, and a cooling-off period on a contract agreed in your home or online — apply to traders and not to private sellers. On Locufy the trader status is shown on the profile.
Look for the trader badge on the Locufy profile, and ask anyone else for it in writing before you agree a price.
Identity
Providers on Locufy prove who they are with photo ID before they can be booked; the ID-checked badge shows who has done it, and the document itself is deleted once the check is made. For a garage clearance firm coming into your home it is the cheapest check there is.
Look for the ID-checked badge on the card, before you message anyone.
VAT
VAT at 13.5%, the reduced rate Revenue publishes for this service. Ask whether the price you were given includes it. A trader under the €42,500 registration threshold does not charge it; one over it must, and must show it separately.
Ask whether the figure you were given includes it, and for the VAT number if they are registered — Revenue publishes the rate for this service. revenue.ie →

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a garage clearance firm: questions people ask
The cost of garage clearance can vary based on the volume of items to be removed, the type of waste involved, and additional services like cleaning or organising. Larger clearances or those requiring special disposal methods may incur higher costs.
The duration of a garage clearance typically ranges from a few hours to a full day, depending on the amount of clutter and the complexity of the job. A standard clearance might take around 2-4 hours for an average-sized garage.
In most cases, a general removal professional is sufficient for garage clearance. However, if there are items requiring regulated handling, such as electrical appliances or hazardous materials, a qualified specialist may be necessary.
Many garage clearance services offer same-day availability, especially for urgent clearances. However, this can depend on the service provider's schedule and the size of the job.
Items like hazardous waste, large construction debris, or materials requiring special permits for disposal may be out of scope. It's best to consult with the service provider beforehand to confirm what can and cannot be removed.
Search the name or the registration number. If the number does not resolve to the name on the quote, stop there.
