THE 60-SECOND VERSION
Hiring a baby sleep consultant in five steps
- Are you on the Tusla register of childminding services, and what is your number?A number you can look up yourself before you agree a price — parental Education — consultants also offer education for parents on sleep science and techniques to help their babies sleep better.
- How does consultant's experience change the price? The better known the provider, the less they need to discount. — ask before the quote rather than after.
- How does complexity of your baby's sleep issues change the price?Complicated work carries more risk of having to redo a part. — ask before the quote rather than after.
- How does duration of support needed change the price? The hours quoted are the hours worked, not an estimate of the job. — ask before the quote rather than after.
- What is not included?Follow-Up Support — after the initial plan is implemented, follow-up support is often provided to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments — get the exclusions named in the quote, because a baby sleep consultant job is priced on what was agreed and not on what was assumed.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
Tusla Early Years Inspectorate — childminding registration
The childminding regulations apply only to a childminder caring for children in the CHILDMINDER'S OWN HOME.
Search the Tusla register of childminding services for the name or the registration number before you agree a price. tusla.ie →
Where the rules stand now
A childminder caring for 3 or fewer pre-school children, and 6 or fewer children in total, remains exempt for the transitional period. Registration becomes mandatory from September 2027. Registration is not yet mandatory for every childminder. Ask whether this childminder is registered, and if not, whether they fall inside the transitional exemption — both answers are legitimate in 2026.
Ask where they are in the process, and when they expect to be registered — the date is September 2027 either way. tusla.ie →
Garda vetting
National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012–2016 The regulation requiring vetting of household members aged 16 and over commenced on 1 February 2025. Vetting is carried out through a relevant organisation, not by a parent directly. Ask to see the disclosure the childminder holds.
Ask to see the garda vetting letter itself, with its date on it — not a statement that one exists.
Insurance
Expect public liability covering minding in the home; ask to see it. From a company, ask for the insurer, the limit and the VAT number, and ask who actually attends: the team that turns up may be employed, subcontracted or both, and only one of those is supervised by the firm you are paying.
Ask to see the current certificate of insurance — the insurer's name, the limit and the date it runs to.
VAT
No VAT: this service is exempt, so there is none to add and none to reclaim. A quote that adds it is wrong. A trader under the €42,500 registration threshold does not charge it; one over it must, and must show it separately.
Ask whether the figure you were given includes it, and for the VAT number if they are registered — Revenue publishes the rate for this service. revenue.ie →

- Travel distance — city rates reflect what it costs to work there.
- In writing before anyone starts — a message on Locufy counts
- What is NOT included, named

- They will not talk about it: duration of support needed — the hours quoted are the hours worked, not an estimate of the job
- A price for the baby sleep consultant before anyone has asked the size, the access or the condition of what they are working on
- Cash only, or a large deposit before anything at all has started

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a baby sleep consultant: questions people ask
The cost can vary based on the consultant's experience, the complexity of your baby's sleep issues, and the duration of support needed. More experienced consultants or those offering extensive follow-up support may charge higher rates.
An initial consultation usually lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the depth of the assessment and the individual needs of the family. Follow-up consultations may be shorter, typically around 30 to 60 minutes.
Many baby sleep consultants offer emergency or same-day consultations, but availability can vary. It's best to inquire directly with the consultant to see if they can accommodate urgent requests.
Yes, many consultants offer packages that include multiple sessions or services. Booking several related jobs can often lead to a discount and a more comprehensive approach to resolving sleep issues.
Baby sleep consultants typically do not provide medical advice or diagnose sleep disorders. Their focus is on behavioural strategies and sleep environment optimisation rather than addressing underlying medical conditions that may affect sleep.
Search the name or the registration number. If the number does not resolve to the name on the quote, stop there.
